Friday Bag o’ Taco Fixin’s

Sometimes I feel I’m neglecting this blog, which is one of the reasons I’m posting about another mixed bag of subjects today. Why the taco theme? Well, that’s because tacos are the first item in today’s bag! Everyone’s getting excited over aerial drone deliveries again, and I’m here to piss on the dream. Ever since the original […]

Air-Minded: Davis-Monthan AFB Photoblogging

Once a year the Air Force conducts Heritage Flight practice sessions at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson, Arizona. The purpose is to train private owners of WWII warbirds and current USAF fighter and attack aircraft pilots to fly formation together. During the rest of the year, pilots who have trained at Davis-Monthan fly at air shows […]

Monday Bag of Fetishes

Everybody has fetishes. Me too. Not stilettos, despite the graphic (hey, you try searching for “bag of fetish” and see how many options Google Images gives you), but one fetish I’ll admit to is aircraft engines, especially the round reciprocating kind. I find them irresistibly sexy. Aviators who’ve flown behind radials and had to wipe […]

Thursday Bag o’ Slack

Putting the X Back in Xmas

I should be working on our annual Christmas letter. Instead, I’m blogging. Annual Christmas letter. How redundant. Christmas is an annual event, no? Let’s just agree to call it our annual letter. Or, Fox News be damned, our Xmas letter. Speaking of, the TVs at the gym were all set to Fox News this morning. I […]

Air-Minded: Giant Arrows

A few weeks ago I posted an entry about Lindy lights, the light beacons that helped airmail pilots in the 1920s and 30s navigate at night. A friend sent me a link to another blogger’s post about early aerial navigation aids. Did you know that in addition to the beacon lights, there were also giant […]

Armistice Day & Old Letters

In past Armistice Day blog posts I’ve quoted some of Dad’s WWII letters from the Pacific Theater, where he was a gunner aboard an oiler, a minesweeper, and an auxiliary repair ship. Looking back through these documents, which I have saved on a computer file, I came across a letter I sent my father in 1995, when I was posted to Nellis AFB, Nevada to help run the Nevada Test & Training Range.
