Time marches on.

Time marches on.
I recently sat for a three-hour Zoom interview with Robert Hoeting, a Dutch friend who follows my blog. He’s starting a podcast featuring pilot interviews and our talk is the first installment: the subject being my experiences in the U.S. Air Force and flying the F-15 Eagle. We covered a bit of my personal history as well, stories I haven’t shared with anyone in ages.
F-15s flew for the active-duty USAF for 51 years, from 1974 to 2025. F-15s were based at Kadena for 46 of those years, from 1979 to 2025. The last flight marked the end of an era.
My friend Burt, a regular Paul’s Thing reader, alerted me to a New York Times article on potential long-term physical and mental health effects of flying fighter aircraft.
What did I get wrong this time? Believing something I read about F-15 Eagles and reposting it to Twitter, that’s what.
And I’ll tell you what, those two astronauts better be getting some kind of voucher from Boeing!
In my day, intercepting potential enemy aircraft in the Alaska ADIZ, the potential enemy was Russia. China was not a factor.
Either way, I’m long out of the cockpit, probably vastly out of touch, and happy to admit my opinions may be ill-informed.
