Friday Grab Bag

Good lord, yesterday’s post was quite the whinge.  I need to work on feeling less insecure, which is the same thing as saying I need a swift kick in the ass.  I blame my dog.

Schatzi’s still down in the dumps, and so, by extension, am I.  She’s listless, slow, barely interested in things that fascinated her before, constantly wanting to be held, not jumping up on the couch … actually, that last bit has me convinced she’s hurt or sprained her back.  Otherwise she seems ops normal: she eats, she drinks, she pees, she poops.  Sometimes her nose feels warm and dry, but mostly it feels cold and wet.  Oh, how I wish I knew what was wrong with her!

Well, let’s just get the rest of the bad news out of the way.  The reason I haven’t posted any Hummercam 2011 updates is because, after laying two eggs and fussing over them for a few days, mother hummingbird disappeared.  The eggs, abandoned, went bad.   We’ll see what happens next summer.  Although I think it unlikely, another hummingbird might select the same spot for a nest.

Last night Jon Stewart went after atheists protesting the erection of a cross on Ground Zero in New York City.  There’s a good and constitutional argument to be made against the cross; people of all faiths (and non-believers too) were killed in the World Trade Center towers on 9/11.  But organized atheists are the wrong group to make that argument.  Better the ACLU, and better that they do it in the name of religious groups, not atheists.

Members of the atheist organization protesting the cross might as well tape signs to their backs reading “kick us, we’re smug assholes who think we’re smarter and better than you.”  I’m a non-believer, which makes me an atheist, but I don’t like to use the word because of those capital-A Atheists.   Organized atheists are a squirm-inducing embarrassment to everyday non-believers, who, I suspect, make up more of the population than anyone cares to admit.

Speaking of the ACLU, we’re going to an NRA dinner Saturday night with the folks from the gun shop where Donna works part time.  I have an ACLU member pin somewhere; I’m going to look for it and wear it.  I expect I’ll have some interesting conversations.

The ever-odious Rush Limbaugh edges closer and closer to shouting “nigger” over the airwaves.  What’s his latest?  From yesterday’s broadcast, speaking of President Obama:

This guy’s — this guy obviously has got a new role model, Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe. The next thing to look out for is for Obama to take the farms. Well, that’s what Zimbabwe, that’s what Mugabe did, he took the white people’s farms. That’s the only, the only place they had any money.

How can it be that Armed Forces Radio still allows Rush Limbaugh to sow disrespect for the commander in chief by broadcasting this seditious swill to American troops overseas?  It’s time I write to Admiral Mullen and Gabby Giffords again.  I wish more people would.

Not exactly ending on an up note here, am I?  Okay, here’s one: Schatzi played with one of her squeaky toys a few minutes ago, and even ran after it when I tossed it down the hall for her.  That’s encouraging.  More of that please, Schatzi!
