Our friend Marlene, known to Hash House Harriers as Jiggy Jiggy, is visiting with her better half Mike (Mike is new to us, and we’re happy to report he’s a very nice guy, who by the way has hashed but has yet to earn a hash name). M&M leave today for their main vacation destination, a dude ranch near Ajo, Arizona. They live in Bend, Oregon, but when we first knew Marlene we were in Hawaii — we stationed at Hickam, she a customer service agent for Northwest at the airport. We were also close with the man she married there, the celebrated Honolulu hasher Dave Lomas, aka Pom (RIP, old friend). Here we are yesterday, with Mike:
And here we were in 1994, with Pom, representing the Honolulu club at an interhash in San Diego:
Twenty-eight years doesn’t make that much of a difference, does it? Doesn’t feel like it, anyway!
Last night we dined at a landmark Tucson restaurant, Jonathan’s Cork, where we were taken aback to see absolutely no one in a mask, not even the staff.
The chart shows weekly totals of new Covid cases (the red line) and deaths (the black line) in Pima County, which includes Tucson, from the first recorded cases in February 2020 to last week. I take some comfort in the local death curve, which has dropped to essentially zero, but look at the current spike in new cases — it’s worse than what I, at least, thought were the darkest days, back in early 2021. Even knowing catching Covid likely won’t kill me, I still don’t want to get it! The hell are you thinking, fellow Tucsonans?
M&M are enamored of our dogs, even though they have a perfectly nice one at home in Bend, and are threatening to abscond with them. I was about to title this post “The Case of the Purloined Pups” but then realized no one would get it until the end.
Here’s a photo of the soon-to-be purloined trio I took about an hour before our company’s arrival on Friday. Notice, please, that they are socially distancing, like the good citizens they are:
Happy Valentine’s Day!
I recognized Jiggy’s name but wasn’t sure till you mentioned Hawaii. She and Pom ran with the Gypsies a few times.
Cheers

In fact, it may have been an SFH3 event we were at. B to B weekend, maybe?
