It may seem an odd choice with the heat of an Arizona summer looming, but I’ve grown my beard back. We’ll see how long it lasts this time … I usually tire of the extra grooming in short order.
My AFib is under control with meds, and soon (day after tomorrow) I’ll undergo an ablation procedure, a more lasting fix. No guarantees, of course, but they say it works in most cases. Fingers crossed.
I can’t tell which rumors are real any more. I saw a post on social media saying Trump has secret plans to make it illegal to call May the 5th “Cinco de Mayo,” but for all I know some random asshole just made the story up. Then again, it could be an actual trial balloon floated by the Trump administration. How to tell? And does it even matter? If it’s racist, you know it’s going to occur to Trump sooner or later … rumors have a way of coming true with this guy. Anyway, yay … it’s Cinco de Mayo!
I don’t see how the USAF can go along with Trump’s plan to buy a VIP-configured jet from another country and make it the new Air Force One. There are at least a million reasons why the Air Force should refuse to add the former Qatari 747 to its fleet and/or man it with its own aircrews and stewards, not least of which is its obligation to protect the president during his travels aboard Air Force aircraft. There should be, and I hope will be, a confrontation with the White House over this. It might turn out to be the test case on how and whether the military will resist the whims and wishes of a wanna-be American dictator. God, I hope so, because so far the military is caving to his every whim.
I may have mentioned wearing a smart watch in order to monitor my heart rate. I still wear my regular watches, at least during the morning while the smart watch is on the charger. One of my favorites is made by a lesser-known brand, Torgoen. It’s an American company, but it uses Swiss quartz movements in its watches and, given their affordability, probably has them assembled in Asia. They primarily market to aviators, and that’s how I came to know of the brand, through a fellow pilot and former member of the USAF Thunderbirds aerial demonstration team, who posted an Instagram selfie with a Torgoen on her wrist. Big, bold, easy to read … I knew right away I wanted one.
This is mine, a Torgoen T9 Lazuli Sapphire GMT. It has an extra hour hand that can be set to any time zone (Zulu/GMT is what I have mine set to), with an inner 12-hour scale and a 24-hour outer scale. How do I know it’s a pilot’s watch? Same way I know a person is a pilot … he (or she) will tell you.
