. . . the more I think the bailout bill was about buying time for the Bush/Cheney administration. Time for them to finish their terms and run off to Dubai before everything collapses. Oh, sure, it was about making the rich richer . . . with these guys it’s always about that (and, it turns out, also about giving police powers to the Internal Revenue Service) . . . but I’m starting to think the main point was to keep the economy from imploding until January 2009, when another administration takes office.
And our senators and congressmen, who could have kept this from happening, who could have put some thought and effort into doing something constructive, something that would have actually helped the economy and working people, just grabbed themselves some pork, gave the fat cats a blank check, and went home to electioneer.
I was shocked to learn that my own representative, Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona’s 8th Congressional District, voted for the bailout bill.
In 1998, when congressional Republicans capped seven years’ relentless investigation and pursuit of a Democratic president by impeaching him for a blow job, I vowed never again to vote for a Republican. Today I take a new vow: never again to vote for an incumbent.
