Counting Our Blessings

My previous post was about our roller coaster leadup to Thanksgiving.  Things got better, as they so often do, and after the excitement of Thanksgiving eve, we enjoyed a peaceful and happy Thanksgiving day.  We try to count our blessings every day, but some days we’re really struck by how fortunate we are.

Party in the kitchen

Donna roasted the turkey in the new (temporary) oven while I smoked ducks out back. It was a beautiful day, clear and cool with almost no wind, perfect for smoking. The kids helped with the stuffing and side dishes, and our guests (Rhoda, Mary Anne, and Darrell) brought other side dishes and appetizers. After dinner, the grandchildren sat in the hot tub while the rest of us cleaned up the kitchen, then enjoyed the firepit on the back patio.

We’d have still had a great day if we hadn’t solved our oven problem . . . we were all set to go over to Mary Anne’s house just in case . . . but fortune smiled upon us and we were able to cook and eat Thanksgiving dinner at home.

Today, the day after Thanksgiving, otherwise known as Black Friday, the women are at the mall. I took my son and grandson with me to a park near the river walk a few miles from here, where they rode bicycles while I scouted trail for an upcoming Hash House Harriers event. Trail scouting done, we lads stopped at Hooter’s for lunch:

Oh yeah, that's what I'm talkin' about . . .

Do we look happy? We should!
