Biscuits & Gravy, Yum

When we’d visit my family in Southeastern Missouri, we’d often drive to Sikeston for dinner at Lambert’s, “Home of Throwed Rolls.” They aren’t shitting about those throwed rolls; otherwise, Lambert’s is the Ur-Cracker Barrel, with country food served in large portions, lots of heartland decor, and a busy gift shop.

Near as I can figure, MAGA outrage over Cracker Barrel’s new logo has to do with — what else? — white supremacy. The old feller sitting by the barrel, a fixture of country store kitsch and WPA photos from the Depression era, is presumably white. Therefore erasing him from the logo is erasing white history. It’s Black Lives Matter, critical race theory, and wokeness all rolled into one slap in the face of whiteness.

I’m from Cape Girardeau and the Missouri Bootheel myself, a MAGA stronghold (home not only of throwed rolls but also Rush Limbaugh), and I know how my people think. I have family members still living there who openly wonder why we don’t have a White History Month.

Well. I loved my visits to Lambert’s, and I love eating at Cracker Barrel, and there ain’t nothin’ wrong with country (except for all the racism).

Where was the outrage when Sambo’s changed its logo? Stupid question … without looking it up, I bet there was plenty. God, people hate change.

Re Bolton: if Trump starts coming after randos (like you and me) who criticize him on social media, we’d have zero recourse. He can use the FBI/DHS/whatever to ruin our lives, and even if we have the resources to fight back, ultimately SCOTUS will back him. I think he wants us to draw this conclusion.

I’m referring, of course, to the Friday morning FBI raid on the home of former Trump administration official John Bolton, a frequent critic of Donald Trump,  widely (and correctly) seen as presidential retribution against an enemy. Now that all federal agencies — and, sadly, the military —  are run by Trump sycophants, there’s nothing to stop little Donnie Two-Scoops from destroying any American citizen who hurts his fee-fees.

Right now, the citizens he’s going after are high-level types: former government officials, agency heads, and cabinet members; generals and admirals (retired and active duty), famous late night TV hosts and news personalities. There are plenty of them to choose from, and there’s probably not much danger he’ll get around to targeting lesser critics (like me): bloggers, TikTokers, Instagram influencers, local radio & TV hosts, podcasters, independent online journalists. But he could, and he clearly wants us to know it.

It wouldn’t take much to shut me up. I live on Social Security and a military pension, both of which he could easily take away. Remember all those Social Security recipients his DOGE teenagers declared dead, canceling their benefits? Would the USAF stand up to protect my retirement pay if Trump ordered Pete Hegseth to cut me off? Not a chance. I’d be homeless and destitute overnight, along with all those government employees fired during the first months of Trump’s administration (and still being fired today). Speaking of, what happened to those people and their families? What would happen to me? Or you? Would anyone know our fates? Sure, the media will report on what’s happening to face cards like Bolton and Comey, but the little people? Who cares?

But as a friend says, in response to my Facebook post, we have to keep speaking out:

Fascism depends on people being afraid. We, the people have to stay courageous and remember that liberty and freedom are worth fighting for — the stakes are high, but too many people who are helpless are suffering already. They are not the majority — we have to keep standing up against them and not be afraid. Our Constitution and how our country really works — the ideals of our Founders and what true patriots have fought and died for over and over are worth fighting for again now.

So far so good with our daughter’s home care work. She likes it and the clients she’s helping are more than happy with her. It’s part-time work for now but she should pick up more clients soon and the work will expand. She has a purpose in life and that’s what she needed. Keep those fingers crossed, okay?

Life here is quiet otherwise. Did I mention Donna actually made biscuits and gravy for breakfast yesterday? To balance out the country, this morning we had bagels and lox, elderly white hippies that we are. Don’t get me started on that!
