During the last few days stories about armed groups shooting and killing illegal immigrants have begun to appear on TV and in local newspapers. Stories like this. Here’s another.
The media seem determined to sooth us by describing these armed groups as “bandits,” perhaps rival gangs of immigrant smugglers fighting each other. As in this quote from an ABC News story:
Investigators did not immediately know a motive for the attack, but gangs of bandits are known to roam border areas preying on illegal immigrants as they cross into the country. Feuding among smuggling organizations also is not uncommon, sometimes involving demands for ransoms from the immigrants relatives to gain their freedom.
Could it be, though, that at least some of these attacks are being carried out by US citizens acting as anti-immigration vigilantes? Some people are beginning to think so, even if they’re reluctant to come right out and say it:
Two migrant people were shot under mysterious circumstances last week in the border region where the Minutemen have been patrolling. One was shot in Mexico and one was shot inside the US. While “Mexican authorities” have claimed that “bandits” were behind it, the victims were quick to point out that nothing was stolen from them. This strange circumstance is added to by the fact that these “bandits” used laser scopes to target their victims.
Gee, ya think? Where do you go once racists start whipping up hate and armed vigilantes begin patrolling the USA/Mexico border? There’s only one damn direction you can go. You start shooting illegal immigrants. And it’s just going to get worse.
