Our friend Mary Anne’s hosting a trunk show for Donna today, inviting people over to drink wine and look at Donna’s embroidery samples. I’m expected to put in an appearance, maybe even work the party as a shill, at least with people who don’t know I’m Donna’s husband: “I love that! Can I buy a dozen?”
Our boy Buckwheat is with his new owner, a Phoenix veterinarian. I drove him up yesterday, dropped him off, and immediately changed all our phone numbers. Oh, we love him and miss him, but he’ll have a better life and we’ll have quiet. When you get a macaw, you owe it to the animal to make a lifetime commitment. Are we ashamed we fell short of a lifetime? Of course we are. But we hung in there for 16 years. That’s longer than most marriages.
So, there’s this hole in our lives. Schatzi senses it and is doing her best to fill it. This morning she brought us a mouse! It’s a hell of a thing when your dog catches mice while your cat lolls about eating bon-bons and watching Oprah.
Last week a friend from high school (42 years ago please dear God take me now) tracked me down. He Googled me, followed a link to this blog, read up on my history, then e-mailed a recap of his. I’ve been Googled! Now if only Kos will link to me!
Gotta go wash the motorcycle so I can arrive at the trunk show in style. More soon.
Buckwheat Update (8/19/06): Things didn’t work out with the new owner. Buckwheat decided to become a monster and almost got her evicted. Fortunately our daughter Polly lives in Phoenix and was able to find an exotic bird rescue association there, whose director quickly paired Buckwheat up with a guy who has a female 10-year-old blue & gold he wants to breed. At last report, Buckwheat’s bonding with his future mate and is a different bird altogether. I am so relieved, and so happy for Buckwheat.
