A lot of people were disturbed by Zell Miller’ speech at the Republican National Convention last night. Of course, a lot of other people were delighted with it . . . probably the same people who think defending our nation requires us to sodomize Iraqi prisoners with broomsticks, but that’s another rant.
Here’s the part that disturbed me:
Now, while young Americans are dying in the sands of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan, our nation is being torn apart and made weaker because of the Democrats’ manic obsession to bring down our commander-in-chief.
Let me get this straight, Zell: our nation is being torn apart and made weaker because we’re having a scheduled, constitutionally-mandated presidential election, and other candidates are running against the incumbent? Gee, doesn’t this happen every four years? Do you really think this nation would be better served if we cancelled presidential elections whenever times are tough? These days, when aren’t times tough?
Our commander-in-chief? The president is commander-in-chief of our military forces. He is not commander-in-chief of the nation, its citizens, or even of its government. He’s an elected official, the head of the executive branch of our government. There are, I believe, two other, co-equal branches. One man is not the boss of this country . . . we fought a war with England over that, didn’t we?
I’ll tell you what your speech said to me, Zell: that if I vote for Kerry I’ll be committing treason. Well sign me up, baby . . . I’m going to tear this nation apart and make it weaker!
