Mister B, RIP

Mister B came to live with us on October 17th, 2017. We’d driven across town to a dachshund rescue to choose a new companion, and this guy immediately let us know he was the one. He was nine, a senior dog who’d lost his home after his first human died. That’s him on Donna’s lap on our drive home.

He caught valley fever in 2020. The first year it almost did him in, mostly because the vet misdiagnosed him with pneumonia and put him on the wrong meds, but once we figured out what was ailing him and got him on the right meds, he recovered.

When you adopt older dogs, you don’t know how long they’ll be around. Mister B lived longer than we expected, as it turned out. He loved to go on road trips with us, and to visit local dog parks. He acted like a much younger dog, until he didn’t.

He began to fail last summer, sometime after the 4th of July, when this photo was taken. It turned out to be the last time he had the strength to go for a long walk with his younger housemates, Fritzi and Lulu.

Mister B’s last year was a rough one, for him and for us, but he crossed the bridge peacefully yesterday afternoon, a few days short of his 17th birthday. We’ll see you on the other side, Mister B, friend and companion.
