The Dumbing Down of Virtually Everything (Part II)

Every morning, my wife watches the Today show on NBC. Since our kitchen adjoins the family room, I can’t avoid seeing and hearing portions of the show as I make breakfast. My God, how much lower can network TV set the bar? Missing white women, Michael Jackson, celebrity chitchat, interviews with NBC reality show contestants . . . wasn’t this once a morning news show?

And speaking of news, what happened to CNN? Used to be, when there was nothing but crap on the other 99 channels, you could always catch up with national and international haps on CNN Headline News. No more. Now you get . . . missing white women, Michael Jackson, celebrity chitchat . . . one wonders how long it’ll be until CNN starts its own “reality” programming. Hey, I have an idea: CNN News Survivor! You put Wolf Blitzer, Christiane Amanpour, Paula Zahn, Aaron Brown, and Lou Dobbs on an island. Every day you vote one reporter off the island until only Larry King remains. . . .

National Public Radio and the Public Broadcasting Service appear to be the only remaining sources of responsible, in-depth, non-pandering-to-the-lowest-common-denominator news reporting in the USA. But not for long, if the forces of darkness have their way.

Picture sneaking up to the attic to listen to the BBC on your illegal shortwave receiver . . . makes you want to just give up and learn to love Fox News, doesn’t it?
