Donna’s Amtrak adventure, a cross-country train ride from Tucson to Toledo, was not without stress. She texted from St. Louis to tell me the train was running four hours late, cutting into the time she and her traveling companion Millie would have to change trains in Chicago. More delays lay ahead — by the time the train pulled into Chicago’s Union Station, only five minutes remained to make the connection to Toledo. Worse still, there was no one to help two ladies in their 80s schlepp their baggage from one train to another, never mind anyone to point them toward the right track.

But they made it somehow, without a minute to spare, and got into Toledo more or less on time. Donna’s sister Georgie and brother in law Don were there to meet them, and now they’re in Michigan and enjoying their time away. Above: Donna and Millie with Georgie and Don in Michigan; me with my fellow book club members at our monthly meeting (held at a used book store just three blocks away from the Tucson Amtrak station), where I gave everyone an update on Donna’s travels.
The verdict on Amtrak? As far as Donna’s concerned, it’s a been-there-done-that. And that’s good enough for me.
Happy semiquincentennial, America!
