Merry Christmas to you, dear readers, from Crouton and Ditalini!<br \/>\n<center><a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/QyrGRZ\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/754\/31872267995_6d3e2bc218_c.jpg\" alt=\"clam chowder\" width=\"800\" height=\"575\" \/><\/a><\/center><br \/>\n<div class=\"hrecipe h-recipe jetpack-recipe\" itemscope itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/Recipe\"><h3 class=\"p-name jetpack-recipe-title fn\" itemprop=\"name\">Clam Chowder<\/h3><ul class=\"jetpack-recipe-meta\"><li class=\"jetpack-recipe-servings p-yield yield\" itemprop=\"recipeYield\"><strong>Servings: <\/strong>6<\/li><li class=\"jetpack-recipe-time\">\n\t\t\t\t<time itemprop=\"totalTime\" datetime=\"2 hrs\"><strong>Time:<\/strong> <span class=\"time\">2 hrs<\/span><\/time>\n\t\t\t<\/li><li class=\"jetpack-recipe-difficulty\"><strong>Difficulty: <\/strong>medium<\/li><li class=\"jetpack-recipe-print\"><a href=\"#\">Print<\/a><\/li><\/ul><div class=\"jetpack-recipe-content\"><br \/>\n<strong>Ingredients<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ingredients<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1\/2 lb bacon<\/li>\n<li>4 carrots<\/li>\n<li>1 med onion<\/li>\n<li>3 or 4 potatoes<\/li>\n<li>1 cup celery<\/li>\n<li>12 oz frozen shrimp (51\/60 or 41\/50 count, peeled &amp; deveined, no tail)<\/li>\n<li>1 can evaporated milk<\/li>\n<li>1 can white cream of mushroom soup<\/li>\n<li>1 1\/2 cups whole milk<\/li>\n<li>1 can minced clams, w\/juice<\/li>\n<li>1 can sliced mushrooms<\/li>\n<li>2 tsp salt<\/li>\n<li>pepper to taste<\/li>\n<li>1 tsp thyme<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Directions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fry\u00a0bacon and crumble; set aside.\u00a0 Chop\u00a0carrots and onion and puree\u00a0in a blender, adding a small amount of water.\u00a0\u00a0Cube\u00a0potatoes, dice\u00a0celery, and saut\u00e9\u00a0in the bottom of\u00a0a large pot with\u00a0the pureed carrots and onions, adding a little bacon grease, until\u00a0potatoes and celery are cooked but still firm.\u00a0 Add other ingredients, except the bacon and thyme.\u00a0 Simmer (don&#8217;t allow to boil) for at least 10 minutes.\u00a0 Add thyme.\u00a0 Add bacon just before serving, and serve the chowder with good crusty bread or freshly made biscuits.<br \/>\n<\/div><\/div><\/p>\n<p><strong>Notes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We doubled the recipe to prepare the pot of chowder in the photo.\u00a0 To double or triple, double or triple all ingredients except salt, which you should add to taste.<\/p>\n<p>Looking for a good pre-chowder appetizer?\u00a0 Try boiling large shelled shrimp in beer, water, and Old Bay Seasoning, serving with sliced lemon and cocktail sauce for dipping.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is a second-generation\u00a0DeMenthe family recipe, passed down\u00a0by my father, Chateaubriand deMenthe.\u00a0 He made clam chowder every Christmas Eve and we carry on the tradition.
