Since then I&#8217;ve been receiving daily updates on one such group, the <a href=\"http:\/\/librotraficante.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Librotraficante Caravan<\/a> &#8230; so many updates that I&#8217;m beginning to suspect their primary purpose is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/webhp?hl=en&amp;tab=mw&amp;authuser=0#hl=en&amp;authuser=0&amp;sclient=psy-ab&amp;q=librotrficante&amp;oq=librotrficante&amp;aq=f&amp;aqi=g-l1g-ls1&amp;aql=&amp;gs_sm=3&amp;gs_upl=2444l7864l0l8044l14l14l0l0l0l0l319l2072l0.12.1.1l14l0&amp;gs_l=hp.3..0i13j0i13i10.2444l7864l0l8044l14l14l0l0l0l0l319l2072l0j12j1j1l14l0.frgbld&amp;pbx=1&amp;bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.,cf.osb&amp;fp=bfbad756b3e0f08f&amp;biw=1024&amp;bih=638\" target=\"_blank\">self-publicity<\/a>.\u00a0 I hope I&#8217;m wrong about that.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, two <a href=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=9217\">previously-reported Arizona school book-banning bills<\/a>, SB 1467 (which would ban books containing profanity) and SB 1202 (which would ban &#8220;partisan&#8221; books), are still being debated and have not yet made their way to the governor&#8217;s desk.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Elsewhere:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Fortunately, books I find disgusting simply don\u2019t get purchased by libraries or required by schools, saving me, and other like-minded individuals, from the embarrassing and hypocritical task of challenging them.&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\nA <a href=\"http:\/\/www.themillions.com\/2012\/03\/ban-this-book-an-uncensored-look-at-the-lorax-and-other-dangerous-books.html\" target=\"_blank\">thoughtful essay<\/a> about anti-censorship progressives and the books they don&#8217;t want their children exposed to.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHow can I raise my child in a Christian home when he is required to read about this?\u201d<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/theknoxvillejournal.com\/pornographic-required-reading-in-knox-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\nThat&#8217;s what a parent said<\/a> about John Green&#8217;s young adult novel <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/99561.Looking_for_Alaska\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Looking for Alaska<\/em><\/a>.  The local paper describes it as a book about &#8220;kids gone wild with porn, sex, drugs, alcohol, and death at a boarding school.&#8221;\u00a0 Sadly, the school board took the book off the required reading list for AP English.\u00a0 I&#8217;m willing to bet the offended parent took a sentence out of context and that the school board didn&#8217;t bother to read the book.\u00a0 <em>Looking for Alaska<\/em> is on my to-read list, and I&#8217;ll review it here soon.<\/p>\n<p>Huffington Post headline: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2012\/02\/28\/one-million-moms-toys-r-us-archie-comics_n_1307689.html\" target=\"_blank\">One Million Moms Threatens Toys &#8216;R&#8217; Us With Boycott Over Archie Comics&#8217; Gay Wedding Issue<\/a>.\u00a0 Yes, I just bet they did.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/148639.Waterland\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Waterland<\/em><\/a>, a novel I mentioned in a <a href=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=8436\">previous post<\/a>, has been judged fit for high school students and will <a href=\"http:\/\/canton-mi.patch.com\/articles\/waterland-to-stay-in-plymouth-canton-s-ap-english-curriculum\" target=\"_blank\">remain on<\/a> a Michigan school district&#8217;s AP English reading list.<\/p>\n<p>A high school district in Troy, Pennsylvania <a href=\"http:\/\/thedailyreview.com\/news\/troy-school-board-tables-approval-of-the-kite-runner-1.1275011\" target=\"_blank\">tables putting <em>The Kite Runner<\/em> on the reading list<\/a> until board members have a chance to read it &#8230; or so they say.\u00a0 Based on other challenges and bannings I&#8217;ve written about, I have a hard time imagining school board members ever reading anything they&#8217;ve banned.<\/p>\n<p>A Greenville, South Carolina middle school is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenvilleonline.com\/article\/20120222\/NEWS\/302220067\/Shakespeare-book-under-review-after-parent-raises-concern-Liberty-Middle\" target=\"_blank\">reviewing a Sparknotes guide to Shakespeare&#8217;s plays<\/a> after a parent complained that the guide, which translates Shakespeare&#8217;s language into modern English, shockingly included translations of &#8220;anatomical terms.&#8221;\u00a0 Sadly, the linked article is hidden behind a paywall, but if you&#8217;re interested in what the parent is objecting to, here&#8217;s a link to a <a href=\"http:\/\/nfs.sparknotes.com\/romeojuliet\/page_106.html\" target=\"_blank\">Sparknotes translation of Romeo and Juliet, Act 2, Scene 4<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A public library in Victoria, Canada, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timescolonist.com\/news\/Banned+book+should+reinstated\/6248626\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\">bans a childrens&#8217; picture book<\/a> that contains the words &#8220;red Indians.&#8221;\u00a0 Hey, haven&#8217;t these Canadians heard of the USA&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/pw\/by-topic\/industry-news\/publisher-news\/article\/45645-upcoming-newsouth-huck-finn-eliminates-the-n-word.html\" target=\"_blank\">Huckleberry Finn solution<\/a>?\u00a0 You know what surprises me?\u00a0 That the book in question, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mog_%28Judith_Kerr%29\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Mog and the Granny<\/em><\/a>, was not written in 1914, but in 1995!<\/p>\n<p>Retail censorship: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kmvt.com\/news\/local\/Where-Does-Censorship-Stop-And-Who-Sets-The-Standards-141838093.html\" target=\"_blank\">PayPal threatens to cut off payments<\/a> to online publishers who market books featuring incest, rape or bestiality.\u00a0 So, would that include the Bible?\u00a0 <em>Update:<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/news.cnet.com\/8301-1023_3-57396812-93\/paypal-reverses-its-ban-on-obscene-e-books\/\" target=\"_blank\">PayPal backs down<\/a> &#8230; so long as the books in question do not contain pornographic images.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Now some individuals have decided that Kirby is profiting from the  death of one of the people killed by the orca Tilikum &#8230; and therefore  his book should be banned.&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\nWell, here&#8217;s an interesting new way to ban a book you don&#8217;t like: if the book deals with the death of an actual person, claim you&#8217;re only trying to <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.seattlepi.com\/candacewhiting\/2012\/02\/29\/banning-books-in-the-21st-century-is-death-at-seaworld-too-revealing\/\" target=\"_blank\">respect that person&#8217;s memory<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/editorials\/index.ssf\/2012\/03\/prison_censorship_some_banning.html\" target=\"_blank\">prison book censorship<\/a>, you just never know what will trigger a ban.\u00a0 Like, for example, a Pennsylvania prison decision to ban a &#8220;Route 6 tourist brochure with a map &#8230;
