{"id":9193,"date":"2012-02-21T11:21:12","date_gmt":"2012-02-21T18:21:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=9193"},"modified":"2012-02-21T16:22:55","modified_gmt":"2012-02-21T23:22:55","slug":"monday-ketchup-catchup-blogging","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=9193","title":{"rendered":"Monday <strike><font color=\"red\">Ketchup<\/font><\/strike> Catchup Blogging"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I took a blogging break over the weekend.\u00a0 A friend came to visit and we put him up on the Murphy bed in the home office, limiting our access to the computers.\u00a0 Yeah, I could have done something with the iPad, but who has the patience to peck out an entire blog post with one finger, one letter at a time (never mind that damn auto-correct changing every other word you want to use)?\u00a0 Not me.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday my friend and I went to the <a href=\"http:\/\/franklinmuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Franklin Auto Museum<\/a> in Tucson, a place I&#8217;ve long wanted to visit. It&#8217;s a great little museum, with about 24 cars and period artifacts on display.\u00a0 I put up a short <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/halfmind\/sets\/72157629418956703\/\" target=\"_blank\">photoset at Flickr<\/a>, but I&#8217;ll post one here:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9194\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9194\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/2-18-12_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-9194\" title=\"Click image to enlarge\" src=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/2-18-12_1-450x337.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/2-18-12_1-450x337.jpg 450w, https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/2-18-12_1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/2-18-12_1.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9194\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shroud over mid-1930s Franklin V-12 cylinder head<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you look under the hood of most new cars, you&#8217;ll see some sort of decorative cover over the engine.\u00a0 Carmakers, I had thought, only started doing that about 10 years ago.\u00a0 But here was a mid-1930s Franklin V-12 with a nice-looking shroud over the engine.\u00a0 What was up with that?\u00a0 Turns out the shroud was both decorative and essential &#8230; Franklin engines were air-cooled and employed fans and ducting to keep the cylinders from overheating.\u00a0 The shroud in the photo helps direct air to the rear cylinder heads, which otherwise would run hotter than the ones in front.\u00a0 Your daily dose of gearhead trivia.<\/p>\n<p>My air museum tour tomorrow will be my annual recertification, so I&#8217;ll be boning up on boneyard birds tonight.\u00a0 Nothing like a checkride to keep you on your toes!<\/p>\n<p>Number one daughter got a job!\u00a0 She&#8217;s working full time at a gun shop, managing the inventory and associated documentation, a critical task for gun shops since their records are regularly inspected by the ATF &#8230; every gun, every serial number, has to be accounted for (except for the ones the ATF hands over to Mexican drug cartels, apparently).\u00a0 Yes, it&#8217;s the same gun shop Donna works at, but wife and daughter swear that had nothing to do with Polly getting the job.\u00a0 Me, I don&#8217;t mind a little nepotism.\u00a0 Anyway, very good news for us, for Polly, and for domestic tranquility in general.\u00a0 Not only that, they&#8217;re giving Polly flexible hours so she can work around her college classes.<\/p>\n<p>Last week we had an 80-degree day.\u00a0 It was so warm the ground squirrels came out of hibernation.\u00a0 I declared winter over and immediately became obsessed with shaving off my beard.\u00a0 That night I shaved the sides, leaving a mustache and goatee.\u00a0 Not enough.\u00a0 Off came the goatee.\u00a0 Not enough.\u00a0 Off came the mustache.\u00a0 Not enough &#8230; but I stopped there (it was all I could do not to go after the eyebrows).\u00a0 Donna says I look younger.\u00a0 I think I look naked &#8230; but, you know, being naked feels good, and I can always grow another beard next winter.\u00a0 Behold the new Paul, now with George Lucas Chin\u00ae:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9196\" src=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/2-21-12_1-450x337.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/2-21-12_1-450x337.jpg 450w, https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/2-21-12_1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/2-21-12_1.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Much bicycling over the weekend: a short but hilly ride with friends Saturday morning and a 21+ mile ride with our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onontucson.com\/?page_id=217\" target=\"_blank\">bicycle hash group<\/a> Sunday morning and afternoon.\u00a0 I hope I may be forgiven for skipping last night&#8217;s weekly downtown walk &#8230; I was beat, but in a good way.<\/p>\n<p>Donna leaves tomorrow to stay with Aunt Joyce in California.\u00a0 Joyce fell and broke her hip.\u00a0 She returns home from the hospital tomorrow, and Donna&#8217;s going to stay with her until she gets settled into her new routine.\u00a0 Donna&#8217;s going to be away for 10 days.\u00a0 Polly and I will be at each other&#8217;s throats &#8230; oh, wait, Polly has a job now &#8230; well, never mind then!<\/p>\n<p>Garbage day at Casa Pablo is Tuesday.  Sometimes when there&#8217;s a Monday holiday  they slip our pickup to Wednesday &#8230; other times they don&#8217;t.  Christmas &amp; New  Year&#8217;s were Monday holidays, but they came for the garbage on  Tuesday as usual.  Yesterday was Presidents&#8217; Day, a minor-league Monday  holiday at best, and they didn&#8217;t come Tuesday.
