{"id":8950,"date":"2012-02-01T17:59:03","date_gmt":"2012-02-02T00:59:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=8950"},"modified":"2023-02-01T07:08:13","modified_gmt":"2023-02-01T14:08:13","slug":"nose-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=8950","title":{"rendered":"Air-Minded: Nose Art at the Air Museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Project Boneyard is now on display at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pimaair.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pima Air &amp; Space Museum<\/a>, where I volunteer as a tour guide.&nbsp; It&#8217;s an art project using old aircraft and aircraft parts as canvases.&nbsp; When I <a href=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=8886\">wrote about it last week<\/a>, the exhibit hadn&#8217;t officially opened and just a few outdoor aircraft were on display.<\/p>\n<p>I thought at first the artists were local but have since learned they came from all over, many of them well-known street and contemporary artists.&nbsp; As long as I&#8217;m correcting mistakes in my earlier post, I misidentified one of the art planes as an &#8220;old Lockheed&#8221;; it is in fact a C-45, made by Beechcraft.<\/p>\n<p>Last week three art planes had been towed into position outside one of the museum hangars.&nbsp; They have been joined by two more, plus an indoor exhibit of 30 painted nose cones, wing and belly tanks, prop spinners, and radomes.<\/p>\n<p>A few days ago the museum director emailed the staff, warning us that some of the items going on display would be &#8220;controversial&#8221; and might upset museum visitors and volunteer staff alike.&nbsp; One piece, we were told, would be set up as a &#8220;peep show&#8221; with a sign warning of &#8220;mature content.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When the director said peep show, I envisioned an enclosure made of office cubicle panels with literal peep holes drilled in the sides.&nbsp; I didn&#8217;t think they&#8217;d just throw a moving pad over the piece:<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"2-1-12_1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/halfmind\/6803884759\/in\/album-72157629135546721\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/c8.staticflickr.com\/8\/7014\/6803884759_1434730961_z.jpg\" alt=\"2-1-12_1\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The director&#8217;s undoubtedly right.&nbsp; This will upset some museum visitors, and maybe even some of our volunteers.&nbsp; Hell, <em>I<\/em> was upset &#8230; upset I had to move the blanket in order to take this photo.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;d think that if cow udders are controversial, human lady breasts would be more so, but there was no blanket over this one:<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"2-1-12_10\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/halfmind\/6803885329\/in\/album-72157629135546721\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/c2.staticflickr.com\/8\/7155\/6803885329_8cd667e0e9_z.jpg\" alt=\"2-1-12_10\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Or this one, which emits a strong anti-capitalist vibe:<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"2-1-12_6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/halfmind\/6803885107\/in\/album-72157629135546721\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/c4.staticflickr.com\/8\/7014\/6803885107_6ddcfc8376_z.jpg\" alt=\"2-1-12_6\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As always, I took a lot of photographs.&nbsp; You can view my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/halfmind\/sets\/72157629135546721\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Flickr photoset here<\/a> (I&#8217;ll entice you to click on the link by telling you that there are more &#8220;controversial&#8221; photos to be seen there).&nbsp; Project Boneyard is a great exhibit, mostly lighthearted and fun to look at, and it&#8217;ll be on display at the air museum through the end of May.&nbsp; See you there?<\/p>\n\n\n<p><em>\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?page_id=14450\"><strong> back to the Air-Minded Index<\/strong><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Project Boneyard is now on display at the Pima Air &amp; Space Museum, where I volunteer as a tour guide.&nbsp; It&#8217;s an art project using old aircraft and aircraft parts as canvases.&nbsp; When I wrote about it last week, the exhibit hadn&#8217;t officially opened and just a few outdoor aircraft were on display.
