{"id":7576,"date":"2011-09-19T13:40:40","date_gmt":"2011-09-19T20:40:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=7576"},"modified":"2011-09-19T23:17:07","modified_gmt":"2011-09-20T06:17:07","slug":"if-its-frustrating-it-must-be-monday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=7576","title":{"rendered":"If It&#8217;s Frustrating, It Must Be Monday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today, for the first time in 14 years, the doctor at the base clinic stood me up.\u00a0 My appointment was at 0850; at 0920 I decided I had more important things to do.\u00a0 Clearly wires had gotten crossed; they&#8217;ve never kept me waiting more than 5 minutes before.\u00a0 I told the airman at the desk I had to leave and would call later.\u00a0 I wanted to ask her about the amateurish, illiterate sign posted in the waiting room, but considering the possibility she&#8217;d had a hand in its composition, kept my mouth shut.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7577\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7577\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/illiterate-sign.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7577 \" title=\"Click to enlarge\" src=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/illiterate-sign-450x403.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/illiterate-sign-450x403.jpg 450w, https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/illiterate-sign-300x268.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7577\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Does this no-show policy of your&#39;s work both ways?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>My wife is prone to compare me to my father, who was a stickler for appointment times.\u00a0 We used to joke that if he&#8217;d been shot, he&#8217;d have left a trail of blood out the door if the doctor kept him waiting &#8230; no pissant civilian was going to waste the colonel&#8217;s time.\u00a0 I sat patiently for 30 minutes, then politely explained that I had to leave.\u00a0 I am not my father.\u00a0 But I can sure understand why he was the way he was.<\/p>\n<p>You may have noticed my use of military time in the first paragraph (0850 instead of 8:50AM).\u00a0 I did that to point out the interesting compromise adopted by the composer of that embarrassing sign: not 0900, not 9:00AM, but 09:00.\u00a0 Great, now no one is confused!\u00a0 Or should that be everyone&#8217;s?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s too bad.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t an important appointment, but I did want to get some prescriptions renewed before I turn 65 and go on Medicare.\u00a0 This was to have been my last appointment with a military doctor.\u00a0 I feel as if the door has hit me on the ass on my way out.<\/p>\n<ul> Now I am an old man,<br \/>\nMy pilot light is out,<br \/>\nWhat used to be my sex appeal,<br \/>\nIs now my water spout,<br \/>\netc.<\/ul>\n<p>It&#8217;s a new week.  I&#8217;ll be leading walking tours at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pimaair.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pima Air &amp; Space Museum<\/a> Wednesday morning.\u00a0 Saturday we were going to Phoenix to watch our granddaughter Taylor play in a softball tournament, but something fell through the cracks and her team isn&#8217;t on the schedule after all.<\/p>\n<p>The Phoenix trip was to have been the first leg of a planned three-day solo motorcycle ride to northern Arizona and back.\u00a0 We were going to go to Phoenix in trail, Donna in the car and me on the Goldwing.\u00a0 After the game we&#8217;d spend the night in Phoenix with the kids; Sunday morning I&#8217;d take off for Flagstaff on the bike.\u00a0 Phoenix to Flag is an easy ride; I&#8217;d planned to take back roads along the Mogollon Rim on the way north.\u00a0 Monday I&#8217;d have ridden around the Flagstaff\/Grand Canyon\/Navaho Nation area; Tuesday would have been a long slog down the freeway back to Tucson.<\/p>\n<p>With no reason to spend Saturday night in Phoenix, I&#8217;d have to ride from Tucson to Flagstaff on Sunday: six hours by freeway and no time to take back roads.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t mind taking the freeway home, but I don&#8217;t want to do it both ways, with only one day in between for touring northern Arizona.\u00a0 It&#8217;s just not worth it.\u00a0 My motorcycle group here is making a Kitt Peak run on Sunday morning, and my friend Ed says he&#8217;s up for a breakfast ride to Bisbee, so I&#8217;m cancelling my room in Flagstaff and staying home.<\/p>\n<p>This is probably more than you ever wanted to know about the logistics of motorcycle trips.<\/p>\n<p>In local news, our mayor has announced a <a href=\"http:\/\/azstarnet.com\/news\/local\/govt-and-politics\/article_1a8f8265-9dfe-5f3a-93db-19e81c6aa3ae.html\" target=\"_blank\">ban on critical speech<\/a> at city council meetings.\u00a0 What with the TSA, the Patriot Act, and politicians <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/rawreplay\/2011\/09\/three-arrested-at-republican-rep-paul-ryans-town-hall-event\/\" target=\"_blank\">using the police to arrest citizens<\/a>, I don&#8217;t know what country I&#8217;m living in any more.\u00a0 It sure isn&#8217;t the United States of America that they taught us about in civics class.<\/p>\n<p>Then again, it&#8217;s Monday.\u00a0 I&#8217;m sure things will look better tomorrow!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today, for the first time in 14 years, the doctor at the base clinic stood me up.\u00a0 My appointment was at 0850; at 0920 I decided I had more important things to do.\u00a0 Clearly wires had gotten crossed; they&#8217;ve never kept me waiting more than 5 minutes before.\u00a0 I told the airman at the desk [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[14,5,2,8,21],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-7576","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-military","category-motorcycling","category-personal","category-politics","category-words"],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7576","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=7576"}],"version-history":[{"count":17,"href":"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7576\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":7594,"href":"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7576\/revisions\/7594"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=7576"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=7576"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=7576"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
