{"id":751,"date":"2008-11-04T12:43:23","date_gmt":"2008-11-04T19:43:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=751"},"modified":"2008-11-04T12:43:23","modified_gmt":"2008-11-04T19:43:23","slug":"choosing-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=751","title":{"rendered":"Choosing Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>That&#8217;s what <a href=\"http:\/\/classiclit.about.com\/library\/bl-etexts\/wwhitman\/bl-ww-election.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Walt Whitman<\/a> called it, and I like it.\u00a0 It has a small-town feel to it, and makes you feel as if your vote counts.\u00a0 Donna and I chose early by mail-in ballot; I hope everyone reading this chose as well.\u00a0 Whichever way you voted, you made history today.<\/p>\n<p>But back to choosing day, and whether our votes really do count.\u00a0 They didn&#8217;t in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.infoplease.com\/ipa\/A0876793.html\" target=\"_blank\">2000<\/a>.\u00a0 Thanks to our antiquated and bizarre system of electing presidents, the loser won.<\/p>\n<p>There have been hundreds of attempts to replace our electoral college system with a direct popular vote.\u00a0 Just because it hasn&#8217;t happened yet is no reason to give up the fight.<\/p>\n<p>My vote didn&#8217;t count in 2000.\u00a0 I think it counted today, and hope to find out later tonight.\u00a0 But I want my vote, and your vote too, to count every time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>That&#8217;s what Walt Whitman called it, and I like it.\u00a0 It has a small-town feel to it, and makes you feel as if your vote counts.\u00a0 Donna and I chose early by mail-in ballot; I hope everyone reading this chose as well.\u00a0 Whichever way you voted, you made history today.
