{"id":74,"date":"2006-01-11T08:09:28","date_gmt":"2006-01-11T15:09:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=74"},"modified":"2006-09-04T09:31:51","modified_gmt":"2006-09-04T16:31:51","slug":"we-have-always-been-at-war-with-eurasia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=74","title":{"rendered":"We Have Always Been at War With Eurasia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Listening to today&#8217;s coverage of Samuel Alito&#8217;s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/01\/12\/politics\/politicsspecial1\/12confirm.html\">confirmation hearings<\/a>, I wasn&#8217;t sure which reality applied: the reality I grew up in, or the reality of the alternate universe next door.<\/p>\n<p>Like this <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/writ.news.findlaw.com\/commentary\/20060109_bergen.html\">unitary executive<\/a> business: what the hell is that? Out of nowhere comes, to hear the media tell it, this well-precedented and widely-accepted doctrine holding that the President can, at will, ignore or overturn court rulings and laws passed by Congress.<\/p>\n<p>Surely, if this is part of my everyday reality, I&#8217;d recognize it. I&#8217;d remember it. They would have touched on it in civics class or something. But no, my reality is based on a government with three equal branches, separation of powers, checks &#038; balances. There&#8217;s an executive, sure, but he&#8217;s not unitary &#8211; he can&#8217;t just strike off on his own. Apparently, the alternate universe&#8217;s reality, where slightly different rules apply, is bleeding over into ours.<\/p>\n<p>And the thing is, I don&#8217;t want to live in that reality. I want my own reality back. I want my United States of America back, my nation of laws. Now, not later.
