{"id":5593,"date":"2011-03-30T09:46:58","date_gmt":"2011-03-30T16:46:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=5593"},"modified":"2011-05-13T15:23:10","modified_gmt":"2011-05-13T22:23:10","slug":"banned-book-news-roundup-12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=5593","title":{"rendered":"Banned Book News Roundup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"130\" height=\"159\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5822\" style=\"margin: 10px; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 130px; height: 159px;\" title=\"banned_1\" src=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/banned_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.philly.com\/philly\/opinion\/20110301_In_fight_for_workers__free_speech_is_at_stake.html\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a>Here&#8217;s an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.philly.com\/philly\/opinion\/20110301_In_fight_for_workers__free_speech_is_at_stake.html\" target=\"_blank\">interesting and timely article<\/a> on how collective bargaining can protect the free speech rights of public employees; specifically, librarians and teachers.<\/p>\n<p>I <em>knew<\/em> there was a reason why we&#8217;re supposed to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ajc.com\/news\/report-teens-six-month-856568.html?cxntlid=cmg_cntnt_rss\" target=\"_blank\">keep quiet in the library<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>Remember those Texas prison wardens who were not allowing inmates to read certain books and magazines?\u00a0 Looks like a warden in South Carolina has taken the idea to its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opposingviews.com\/i\/elected-officials-banning-books-in-prisons-except-bible\" target=\"_blank\">logical conclusion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That craven Bedford, New Hampshire school superintendent who immediately pulled two books from a high school reading list after one kid&#8217;s parents objected to them?\u00a0 Now he&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionleader.com\/article.aspx?headline=Bedford+superintendent+plans+checklist+to+rate+books&amp;articleId=fd8fcbef-845c-4613-8d2c-72ef57158f4a\" target=\"_blank\">making a checklist<\/a> to help him decide which other books to ban.\u00a0 Dude, man up &#8230; them Texas prison wardens don&#8217;t need no stinking checklist!<\/p>\n<p>Oh great.\u00a0 Now they&#8217;re <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/?p=4334\" target=\"_blank\">going after bookstores<\/a>.\u00a0 They&#8217;d better hurry before they&#8217;re all gone.<\/p>\n<p>Ever wonder about the mentality of parents who restrict what their children read, and want to restrict what your children read too?\u00a0 Warning: this online forum <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cafemom.com\/group\/41\/forums\/read\/13606777\/Should_libraries_be_allowed_to_have_a_list_of_banned_books\" target=\"_blank\">Q&amp;A session<\/a> will depress you.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an antidote to the previous entry: a good essay on the benefits of parents allowing children <a href=\"http:\/\/blue-succubus.livejournal.com\/266311.html\" target=\"_blank\">unrestricted access to books<\/a> (<em>I don&#8217;t know why that link shows up as broken &#8230; it works for me and should work for you too, so go ahead and click on it<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>This is funny.  A student whines about an assignment to read a list of books, and the advice columnist employs the old &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.earnmydegree.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/17\/kate-stupid-reading-list-college\/\" target=\"_blank\">most of those books are banned<\/a>&#8221; trick.\u00a0 I bet it worked, too!<\/p>\n<p>At last, some book banning I can get behind: kicking <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2011\/mar\/24\/inaccurate-textbooks-banned-va-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\">intentionally inaccurate history textbooks<\/a> out of the classroom.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s an interesting and timely article on how collective bargaining can protect the free speech rights of public employees; specifically, librarians and teachers.
