{"id":5540,"date":"2011-02-23T10:43:48","date_gmt":"2011-02-23T17:43:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=5540"},"modified":"2011-03-09T21:05:43","modified_gmt":"2011-03-10T04:05:43","slug":"get-off-my-clothes-and-out-of-my-tree","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=5540","title":{"rendered":"Get Off of My Clothes and Out of My Tree!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last month, in the wake of the Tucson shootings, I joined a chorus of bloggers <a href=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=5137\" target=\"_self\">commenting<\/a> on what many saw as a connection &#8230; not necessarily causal but closely related &#8230; between calls to violence from the right and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csgv.org\/issues-and-campaigns\/guns-democracy-and-freedom\/insurrection-timeline\" target=\"_blank\">spate of politically- and ideologically-motivated shootings<\/a> we&#8217;ve seen in our country over the past two or three years.\u00a0 My conservative friends were quick to tell me I was <a href=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=5154\" target=\"_self\">imagining things<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So I guess I won&#8217;t worry about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonmonthly.com\/archives\/individual\/2011_02\/028137.php\" target=\"_blank\">this<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>On Saturday night, when <em>Mother Jones<\/em> staffers  tweeted a report  that riot police might soon sweep demonstrators out of  the Wisconsin  capitol building&#8211;something that didn&#8217;t end up  happening&#8211;one  Twitter user sent out <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/JCCentCom\/status\/39211723726651392\" target=\"_blank\">a chilling public response<\/a>: &#8220;Use live ammunition.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5554\" title=\"live ammunition\" src=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/live-ammunition.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"339\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/live-ammunition.jpg 339w, https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/live-ammunition-300x141.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 339px) 100vw, 339px\" \/>From my own Twitter account, I confronted the user, JCCentCom. He tweeted back that the demonstrators were &#8220;political enemies&#8221; and &#8220;thugs&#8221; who were &#8220;physically threatening legally elected officials.&#8221; In  response to such behavior, he said, &#8220;You&#8217;re  damned right I advocate  deadly force.&#8221; He later called me a &#8220;typical leftist,&#8221; adding, &#8220;liberals hate police.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Only later  did we realize that JCCentCom was a deputy attorney general for the state of Indiana.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Nor will I worry about <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ajc.com\/jay-bookman-blog\/2011\/02\/23\/a-call-for-armed-counterprotesters-to-atlanta-labor-rally\/\" target=\"_blank\">this<\/a>, a call for armed counter-protestors to show up at a Service Employees International Union rally scheduled today in Atlanta, Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing to see here, folks.\u00a0 Just patriotic Americans exercising their Second Amendment remedies, and if one of them fires into a crowd of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">striking teachers trying to protect their union collective bargaining rights<\/span><\/span> dirty hippies, whether in Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, or Georgia, it&#8217;ll be the <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">teachers<\/span>&#8216;<\/span> hippies&#8217; fault for starting it in the first place.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Mindful of <a href=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=5492\">Einstein&#8217;s calming advice<\/a> to those living in troubled times, I&#8217;m going to spend the rest of the day with my critters.\u00a0 As <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Calvin_and_Hobbes\" target=\"_blank\">Calvin<\/a> said, &#8220;I wish people were more like animals. Animals don&#8217;t try to change you  or make you fit in. They just enjoy the pleasure of your company.  Animals aren&#8217;t conditional about friendships. Animals like you just the  way you are. They listen to your problems, they comfort you when you&#8217;re  sad, and all they ask in return is a little kindness.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And maybe some fresh, clean clothes to cuddle up in.\u00a0 Our cat Chewie, who sheds hair by the bushel, invariably curls up on freshly folded laundry, preferably my favorite black T-shirts. That&#8217;s something for a declawed cat.
