{"id":4637,"date":"2010-11-02T13:24:47","date_gmt":"2010-11-02T20:24:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=4637"},"modified":"2010-11-02T13:28:13","modified_gmt":"2010-11-02T20:28:13","slug":"in-which-paul-channels-andy-rooney","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=4637","title":{"rendered":"In Which Paul Channels Andy Rooney"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"130\" height=\"140\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4646\" style=\"margin: 10px; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 130px; height: 140px;\" title=\"andy rooney-crop\" src=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/andy-rooney-crop.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>I thought today would be robocall-free, and said so on Facebook.\u00a0 An hour later one of my little Facebook friends reported getting one.\u00a0 So much for that theory.<\/p>\n<p>In three years of using one, I&#8217;ve received not one sales pitch, robocall, or charity solicitation on my cell phone.\u00a0 Not so my landline, which has become such an unwanted-call magnet I no longer answer it.\u00a0 But friends tell me their cell phones are not immune and that I won&#8217;t be able to hide forever.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m starting to see sponsored posts &#8212; advertisements formatted to look like regular posts, just like they&#8217;ve been doing in newspapers for years &#8212; on some (formerly) favorite blogs.\u00a0 Earlier today someone on Twitter was bitching about sponsored tweets.\u00a0 Damn, sponsored tweets?\u00a0 I thought Foursquare would be the death of Twitter.\u00a0 Shows you what an optimist I am!<\/p>\n<p>Just today I put a new widget on the left sidebar to show what I&#8217;m reading on my Nook.\u00a0 Now, when I mouse over the word &#8220;Nook&#8221; in my previous post, a sponsored popup appears.\u00a0 That&#8217;s the absolute last thing I want to happen, and I think I&#8217;ll have to ditch the widget.\u00a0 Ditch the widget.\u00a0 I like the sound of that.<\/p>\n<p>Not a day goes by two or three spambots don&#8217;t register at my blogs in order to post comment spam.\u00a0 So far the spam filter&#8217;s caught them all.\u00a0 If they were human, and not bots, they&#8217;d be smart enough to evade the filter, and then we&#8217;d all have to give up blogging . . . or maybe not, witness Twitter and Foursquare.<\/p>\n<p>As bad as all this is, it&#8217;s nothing compared with the pure evil of pharmaceutical advertising on TV.<\/p>\n<p>I wish there was a widget for my TV that would blank out the screen during these ads.\u00a0 It could key in on the way Wilford Brimley pronounces &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2hNu1I9r_1A\" target=\"_blank\">diabeetus<\/a>.&#8221; That&#8217;s one widget I wouldn&#8217;t ditch.<\/p>\n<p>p.s. I didn&#8217;t ditch the widget . . .
