float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 150px; height: 253px;\" src=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/images\/ap stylebook.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>Land o&#8217; Goshen, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apstylebook.com\/?do=product&amp;pid=978-0-917360-53-4\" target=\"_blank\">Associated Press Stylebook<\/a> is officially <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poynter.org\/column.asp?id=101&amp;amp;amp;aid=181664\" target=\"_blank\">ditching<\/a> &#8220;Web site&#8221; for &#8220;website.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Maybe now the copy editors at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The New Yorker<\/a> will consider uncapping the &#8220;i&#8221; in &#8220;internet.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For years now, I&#8217;ve been tripping over The New Yorker&#8217;s insistence on capitalizing the &#8220;i&#8221; in internet.\u00a0 It <a href=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=261\" target=\"_self\">offends me<\/a>.\u00a0 Who decided &#8220;internet&#8221; is a proper noun?\u00a0 It&#8217;s a thing, like a telephone exchange or a radio network, and who capitalizes telephone or radio?\u00a0 No one, that&#8217;s who!<\/p>\n<p>The New Yorker is famous for its high editing standards, but some of those standards are eccentric (like the toothache-inducing substitution of &#8220;vender&#8221; for &#8220;vendor&#8221;), and they are strictly in-house . . . they don&#8217;t publish their stylebook.\u00a0 The AP Stylebook, however, is available for purchase, and has long been my bible.\u00a0 When I reported for duty to the US Special Operations Command in 1987, I was issued a 1984 edition of the AP Stylebook.\u00a0 Everything I wrote for USSOCOM had to be in compliance with the AP Stylebook, and I learned to love its simple alphabetical layout.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a short sample:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>lectern, podium, pulpit, rostrum<\/strong> A speaker stands <em>behind a lectern<\/em>, <em>on a podium<\/em> or <em>rostrum<\/em>, or <em>in the pulpit<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Isn&#8217;t that easy?\u00a0 And how elegant!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Here&#8217;s another:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>palate, palette, pallet<\/strong> <em>Palate<\/em> is the roof of the mouth.\u00a0 A <em>palette<\/em> is an artist&#8217;s paint board.\u00a0 A <em>pallet<\/em> is a bed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I decided to order the latest version of the AP Stylebook, so long as they haven&#8217;t caved on <a href=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=253\" target=\"_self\">gantlet\/gauntlet<\/a>.\u00a0 They <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wordwizard.com\/phpbb3\/viewtopic.php?f=7&amp;t=2727\" target=\"_blank\">haven&#8217;t<\/a>.\u00a0 Associated Press, my check&#8217;s in the mail!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Land o&#8217;
