Television actors, they say, get haircuts every two weeks so the character they play always looks the same from show to show. I get mine cut every five weeks, so my hair varies in length. Lately it’s been getting quite long. Over the winter, at Donna’s request, I had it trimmed but not really cut. My locks attained a length not seen since 1973, the year I joined the Air Force.<\/p>\n

And I hated it. Bernice, I said to my barber this morning, this shagginess cannot stand. Here’s the before & after:<\/p>\n

<\/center>You’re probably thinking there’s hardly any difference, but Donna can certainly see it, and I feel downright frisky. As the weather heats up (and Donna gets used to me in short hair again), I’ll ask Bernice to cut it even shorter. The military does things to you. It’s like being a Catholic or something. And my barber, a veteran herself, gets it.<\/p>\n

Although I must say, short haircuts on men is the standard again, and I make too much of having been military. Time was you could tell civilians from GIs by the length of their hair; it hasn’t been that way for 30 years or more.<\/p>\n
