{"id":2897,"date":"2009-10-22T14:25:23","date_gmt":"2009-10-22T21:25:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=2897"},"modified":"2009-10-23T07:09:24","modified_gmt":"2009-10-23T14:09:24","slug":"eye-rollers-part-i","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=2897","title":{"rendered":"Eye Rollers (Part I)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonmonthly.com\/archives\/individual\/2009_10\/020570.php\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Benen comments on the Washington Monthly blog<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Long-time regulars may know I have quite a few &#8220;conversation enders.&#8221; These are comments that lead you to know, the moment you hear them, that the writer\/speaker is either clueless or intellectually dishonest, and there&#8217;s really no reason to engage the person in a serious dialog.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He goes on to cite a few examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Tax cuts are fiscally responsible because they pay for themselves&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Evolution is just a theory&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Global warming can&#8217;t be real because it&#8217;s cold outside&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I too have learned, over the years, to disengage when I hear certain code phrases or words.\u00a0 I quit listening to, quit trying to reason with, and quietly move away from, the person saying them.\u00a0 I always called them &#8220;eye rollers,&#8221; but they&#8217;re the same thing as Benen&#8217;s &#8220;conversation enders.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2898\" title=\"eyeroller\" src=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/eyeroller.jpg\" alt=\"eyeroller\" width=\"450\" height=\"315\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some of my own eye rollers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Calling health care &#8220;ObamaCare&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Describing anything as &#8220;socialistic&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Any time  a non-scientist cites disagreement within the scientific community to prove or disprove anything<\/li>\n<li>Any mention  of the complexity of eyeballs in discussions about nature<\/li>\n<li>Any mention of the media&#8217;s  &#8220;liberal bias&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Any mention of &#8220;welfare queens&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Calling the inheritance tax a &#8220;death tax&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Saying Bush &amp; Cheney &#8220;kept us safe&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;You people&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Saying the left treated Bush the same way the right is treating Obama today<\/li>\n<li>Any argument based on the premise that two wrongs make a right (torturing Muslims is okay, it&#8217;s okay to shoplift from evil corporations, etc)<\/li>\n<li>Blaming economic woes on unions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And the eye roller of all time?\u00a0 &#8220;Some of my best friends are black.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I have a feeling I&#8217;ll be revisiting this topic from time to time; hence the &#8220;Part I&#8221; in the title.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Steve Benen comments on the Washington Monthly blog: Long-time regulars may know I have quite a few &#8220;conversation enders.&#8221; These are comments that lead you to know, the moment you hear them, that the writer\/speaker is either clueless or intellectually dishonest, and there&#8217;s really no reason to engage the person in a serious dialog.
