<\/p>\nToday’s our 42nd anniversary.\u00a0 Donna and I met 43 years ago, when she responded to a “carpoolers needed”\u00a0notice I’d posted to the bulletin board at American River Junior College in Sacramento, California.\u00a0 We were\u00a0freshmen,\u00a0as dumb and young as they come.<\/p>\n
We’re not freshmen any more, or young.\u00a0 But we still see ourselves pretty much as we were back in 1965.<\/p>\n

Just not as skinny, but hey, we’re working on that.<\/p>\n
The first thing I did this morning was to Google “anniversary gifts.”\u00a0 It seems there’s a traditional gift for each of the first 20 years,\u00a0then every\u00a05th year thereafter.\u00a0 I should have bought Donna a ruby on our 40th anniversary; I’m told to buy her a sapphire on our 45th.\u00a0 One site, About.com<\/a>,\u00a0helpfully It’s not going to be a gift day, though.\u00a0 Neither of us want that.\u00a0 Instead, we’re going to do things together, then go out to dinner.\u00a0 We’re going to think of all the things that happened to us and between us during the last 42 years.\u00a0 We’re going to\u00a0be thankful\u00a0we still have each other and love each other.<\/p>\n My mother met Donna a couple of weeks after we started carpooling.\u00a0 She liked Donna right off the bat . . . really liked her.\u00a0 She must have known something.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Today’s our 42nd anniversary.\u00a0 Donna and I met 43 years ago, when she responded to a “carpoolers needed”\u00a0notice I’d posted to the bulletin board at American River Junior College in Sacramento, California.\u00a0 We were\u00a0freshmen,\u00a0as dumb and young as they come.
