{"id":2801,"date":"2009-10-13T11:05:59","date_gmt":"2009-10-13T18:05:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=2801"},"modified":"2009-10-13T11:49:05","modified_gmt":"2009-10-13T18:49:05","slug":"praise-in-public-correct-in-private","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=2801","title":{"rendered":"Praise in Public, Correct in Private"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I rode my bicycle down to the corner <a href=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=1910\" target=\"_self\">coffee shop<\/a> this morning, my favorite mode of exercise (it&#8217;d be good exercise too, if it weren&#8217;t for those damn scones).\u00a0 A leisurely cup of coffee at an outdoor table, reading the book and movie reviews in the latest Tucson Weekly, makes for a great morning.<\/p>\n<p>But not today.\u00a0 While I waited at the counter for my coffee, the owner of the coffee shop started in on a couple of his employees.\u00a0 They had screwed up someone&#8217;s order, but instead of just telling the kids what they&#8217;d done wrong, the owner loudly berated them, talking down to them in a really nasty way.\u00a0 Apparently he kept at them; sitting at my table later I heard other patrons talking about the scene the owner was making inside.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2802\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2802\" style=\"width: 452px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2802\" title=\"scolding\" src=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/scolding.jpg\" alt=\"Not an exact depiction of events (but close)\" width=\"452\" height=\"416\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/scolding.jpg 452w, https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/scolding-300x276.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 452px) 100vw, 452px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2802\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Not an exact depiction of events (but close)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In business and the military, a basic tenet of leadership is to praise in public and correct in private.\u00a0 No one likes to be corrected, but to be corrected in front of others . . . especially in front of outsiders who have no connection with the issue at hand . . . is humiliating.\u00a0 Does the coffee shop owner think these kids are going to have his best interests at heart after the way he treated them this morning?\u00a0 If he does, he&#8217;s a fool.\u00a0 But maybe he digs on humiliating underlings and doesn&#8217;t really care what the consequences may be.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m surprised those kids didn&#8217;t walk.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a McDonald&#8217;s and a Subway right next door, and the wages are probably comparable.\u00a0 Are jobs so scarce these days they don&#8217;t dare walk?\u00a0 Now that&#8217;s a depressing thought.<\/p>\n<p>The robber barons are determined to eliminate the American middle class.\u00a0 They stole our savings, gambled away our pensions, cut our wages and benefits, and are well on their way to dismantling the few remaining unions.\u00a0 What if it&#8217;s not just about putting more money in their own pockets?\u00a0 What if it&#8217;s also about subjugating people?<\/p>\n<p>Rise up, working men and women . . . before it&#8217;s too late!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I rode my bicycle down to the corner coffee shop this morning, my favorite mode of exercise (it&#8217;d be good exercise too, if it weren&#8217;t for those damn scones).\u00a0 A leisurely cup of coffee at an outdoor table, reading the book and movie reviews in the latest Tucson Weekly, makes for a great morning.
