{"id":277,"date":"2007-11-03T15:12:06","date_gmt":"2007-11-03T22:12:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=277"},"modified":"2008-11-28T10:40:38","modified_gmt":"2008-11-28T17:40:38","slug":"fall-down-go-boom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=277","title":{"rendered":"Fall Down and Go Boom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Another birthday come and gone.\u00a0 Thank God the goodies last longer than the day itself.\u00a0 Speaking of which, here&#8217;s my new bicycle:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1043\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1043\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1043\" title=\"my_new_bike\" src=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/my_new_bike.jpg\" alt=\"My new bike!\" width=\"400\" height=\"428\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1043\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">My new bike!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p>Pretty pretentious, eh?\u00a0 So pretentious it came with clip-in pedals, which in turn forced an investment in high-tech bicycle shoes.\u00a0 I rode it for the first time today, mainly to get the knack of clipping in and out of those diabolical pedals.\u00a0 Getting into them is\u00a0a pain.\u00a0 Getting out of the damned things is authentic pain.\u00a0 Eight miles into my training ride a toddler ran\u00a0onto the bike trail and down I went, feet welded to the pedals,\u00a0swearing all the way to the ground.\u00a0 Next time I&#8217;ll hit the kid.<\/p>\n<p>They say you&#8217;ll go down three times learning to use clip-ins.\u00a0 Having excelled at every other thing in my life, I&#8217;ve set my sights on a\u00a0higher number.\u00a0 To ensure I get lots of practice, I stopped at the bike shop on the way home\u00a0and bought a pair of clip-in pedals for my <em>other<\/em> bike.\u00a0 No going back now!<\/p>\n<p>Of our little riding group, I&#8217;m the only one to sign up for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbaa.com\/!ETT\/ETThome.html\" target=\"_blank\">El Tour de Tucson<\/a>.\u00a0 The rest wimped out.\u00a0 Two Saturdays from now I&#8217;ll join thousands of\u00a0bicyclists, most of them even more dangerous than me, for a 35-mile ride around the north side of Tucson.\u00a0 There are 66-, 80-, and 109-mile routes as well, but we&#8217;ll leave those to riders for whom &#8220;peloton&#8221; and &#8220;spandex&#8221; are\u00a0everyday words.\u00a0 Maybe next year, or the year after.\u00a0 I haven&#8217;t decided whether to tackle the tour on the old bike or the new one.\u00a0 Right now I&#8217;m thinking old . . .
