I think she has a troubled soul.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2415\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2415\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2415\" title=\"07-14-09_2a\" src=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/07-14-09_2a.jpg\" alt=\"Chewy\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/07-14-09_2a.jpg 450w, https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/07-14-09_2a-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2415\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chewy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When we first started observing our hummingbird, she was always on her nest after dark.\u00a0 But since the chicks hatched, she spends her nights somewhere else.\u00a0 The chicks are there, of course, and the mother comes around during the day to feed them, but she doesn&#8217;t sleep with them.\u00a0 I guess it would be pretty uncomfortable trying to share a nest with two growing and restless chicks, come to think of it, so this is probably a normal aspect of hummingbird motherhood.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2418\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2418\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2418\" title=\"07-13-09_1a\" src=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/07-13-09_1a.jpg\" alt=\"The chicks, alone in their nest\" width=\"450\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/07-13-09_1a.jpg 450w, https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/07-13-09_1a-300x222.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2418\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The chicks, alone in their nest<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When the chicks first hatched they had short orange beaks (<a href=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/07-02-09_8.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">click for photo<\/a>).\u00a0 I suppose that makes sense, since they would have needed their beaks to break out of their shells.\u00a0 Logically, they wouldn&#8217;t start to grow proper hummingbird beaks until after they were hatched.\u00a0 That seems to be the case \u2014 you can see in this photo how their beaks are turning black and getting visibly longer.\u00a0 They also have long narrow black tongues, which they occasionally stick out like anteaters.\u00a0 I think I heard them peeping yesterday, which gave me a chuckle \u2014 I only recently learned that hummingbirds chirp, like any other bird.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m continuing to load larger hummingbird photos to my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/halfmind\/\" target=\"_blank\">Flickr photostream<\/a>, by the way, and you can view them there.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Donna and I always sleep in the same place \u2014 our bed.
