I was hoping something would happen to shift the media’s attention away from Imus.\u00a0 Another Britney meltdown, a runaway bride, something like that.\u00a0 But nothing like the horrific shootings at Virginia Tech<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the wake of the Columbine High School shootings<\/a>, it became more difficult for kids to be different, at least in dark ways.\u00a0 Now it’s going to be more difficult for disturbed people and eccentric loners across the board.\u00a0 Do you doodle in class or meetings?\u00a0 High school students already know this, and you’d better learn it too: don’t draw guns or daggers.<\/p>\n

We always overreact, and this’ll be no exception.\u00a0 One predictable overreaction\u00a0is coming from\u00a0the pro-gun people, who want us all to start packing heat<\/a>.\u00a0 Next time some maniac pulls a gun, armed citizens will mow him down!\u00a0 What a world these NRA types live in.\u00a0 Every man a Steven Sagal, every woman an Annie Oakley, every child a Buford Pusser.\u00a0\u00a0Walkin’ tall, buddy, walkin’ tall.<\/p>\n

I suspect another overreaction will be a return to 1950s-style methods for dealing with mentally ill and disturbed people.\u00a0 That homeless guy who uses your alley as a toilet?\u00a0 The cat lady next door who’s bringing down property values?\u00a0 Your senile live-in grannie?\u00a0 Hey, just have ’em committed.\u00a0 By this time next year, it’ll be easy!\u00a0 And God knows, there are plenty of empty military facilities around.<\/p>\n

An overreaction I’d like to see would be universal public condemnation of NBC and MSNBC,\u00a0who tripped all over themselves in their haste to exploit the maniac’s sad, senseless video<\/a>.\u00a0 Who knows how many copycat crazies will come out of their smelly basements now?\u00a0 But I fear any public condemnation will be toothless.\u00a0 According to Drudge<\/a>, NBC’s ratings went through the roof when they showed that evil crap.<\/p>\n
