{"id":217,"date":"2007-03-04T13:11:46","date_gmt":"2007-03-04T20:11:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=217"},"modified":"2008-11-27T19:56:56","modified_gmt":"2008-11-28T02:56:56","slug":"train-crazy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=217","title":{"rendered":"Train Crazy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My friends Darrell and Mary Anne took me on a garden train tour yesterday, an organized event where train nuts in and\u00a0around Tucson\u00a0put their outdoor G Gauge (G for garden, I guess) railroad setups on display.\u00a0 I visited three different homes; there were at least eight on the tour but I didn&#8217;t have time to see them all.<\/p>\n<p>Check this out:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_970\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-970\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-970\" title=\"train_crazy\" src=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/train_crazy.jpg\" alt=\"G Gauge Train Setup\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-970\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">G Gauge Train Setup<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This is one of about ten different rail layouts in one couple&#8217;s back yard.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a quarry, about four feet deep, and the locomotive is actually steam-driven.<\/p>\n<p>Would this be fun?\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know.\u00a0 I used to love model trains, but never with this level of enthusiasm.\u00a0 God, think about it.\u00a0 First comes an oval track and one train.\u00a0 Then the magazines.\u00a0 Then you start landscaping and adding more track, more trains.\u00a0 Swap meets.\u00a0 More track, more trains.\u00a0\u00a0Then you start painting G Scale houses and people, then roads and little cars.\u00a0 Meetings with other train buffs.\u00a0 It would take over your life!<\/p>\n<p>These people are, in short,\u00a0fanatics.\u00a0 What wife would go along with this obsession?\u00a0 How do these couples keep their marriages together?\u00a0 Surprisingly, though,\u00a0my wife\u00a0says she&#8217;d love to have a G Gauge train in our back yard.\u00a0 So maybe the couples who displayed their railroads yesterday <em>are<\/em> into the hobby together!<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s another photo (that&#8217;s Mary Anne and her grandkids in the background):<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_972\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-972\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-972\" title=\"train_nuts\" src=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/train_nuts.jpg\" alt=\"G Gauge Train Setup\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-972\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">G Gauge Train Setup<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\n<p>Yes, it would be fun.\u00a0 But am I crazy enough?\u00a0 Probably not, but maybe Donna is.\u00a0 Because one of us would have to get down on hands and knees at least once a week to keep the tracks clean, and it won&#8217;t be me!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My friends Darrell and Mary Anne took me on a garden train tour yesterday, an organized event where train nuts in and\u00a0around Tucson\u00a0put their outdoor G Gauge (G for garden, I guess) railroad setups on display.\u00a0 I visited three different homes;
