News Roundup<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With Harper Lee&#8217;s re-emergence on the literary scene, people are once again talking about her famous novel <em>To Kill a Mockingbird<\/em>. Predictably, some of those people think <a href=\"http:\/\/bannedbooks.world.edu\/2012\/07\/30\/banned-books-awareness-to-kill-a-mockingbird\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the book<\/a>, and at least one <a href=\"http:\/\/bookriot.com\/2015\/07\/14\/high-school-production-tkam-shut\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high school production of a play based on the book<\/a>, should be suppressed.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s some news about a failed effort\u00a0to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2015\/jul\/15\/poltergeist-posters-cleared-complaints-clown-image?CMP=twt_gu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ban disturbing posters of clowns<\/a>. While I&#8217;m totally opposed to banning books, I\u00a0fully endorse the banning of clowns.<\/p>\n<p>Administrators force a\u00a0public school library to pull copies of a graphic novel from its shelves after a single verbal complaint from a parent, <a href=\"http:\/\/kunm.org\/post\/school-violated-policy-pulling-racy-book#stream\/0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">short-circuiting their own formal review process<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Public library in Texas <a href=\"http:\/\/wonkette.com\/591152\/in-surprise-twist-texas-town-allows-fabulous-kids-books-to-gay-up-public-library\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stands up to conservative parents<\/a> who wanted two LGBT-themed books removed from its children&#8217;s collection.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t know that Ray Bradbury&#8217;s publisher, Ballentine Books, for years only sold a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comicmix.com\/2015\/07\/07\/mindy-newell-232-7-celsius\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bowdlerized version of <em>Fahrenheit 451<\/em><\/a>. Apparantly Bradbury didn&#8217;t know either, and was furious when he found out.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.livetradingnews.com\/adults-are-more-likely-to-believe-there-are-books-that-should-be-banned-than-movies-television-shows-or-video-games-110795.htm#.Va06kmCp2JU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Disturbing if true<\/a>: &#8220;In just four years, the percentage of Americans who believe there are any books that should be banned has increased by more than half: 28% believe this to be the case today, vs. 18% in 2011.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The mayor of Venice, Italy, has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/world-news\/venice-mayor-bans-books-on-homosexuality-disability-779588\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">officially banned school books addressing homosexuality and disability<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Fivethirtyeight blog\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/we-tried-and-failed-to-identify-the-most-banned-book-in-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">questions the statistical validity<\/a> of the American Library Association&#8217;s list of most-banned books, complaining that the ALA won&#8217;t share its data. Here is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slj.com\/2015\/06\/censorship\/ala-addresses-its-challenged-book-list-after-questioning-by-fivethirtyeight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ALA&#8217;s response<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/blog\/2015\/06\/29\/judy-blume-bashes-trigger-warnings-a-lot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trigger warnings<\/a>: Judy Blume laments that many on the left are now pushing censorship with the same zeal as the 1980s religious right.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/genprogress.org\/voices\/2015\/07\/14\/37682\/columbia-university-removes-trigger-warnings-citing-censorship-concerns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Columbia University agrees<\/a> with Ms Blume: it will combat censorship by not requiring professors to issue trigger warnings about class materials. It did, however, <a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/thecut\/2015\/07\/columbia-says-no-to-trigger-warnings.html?mid=twitter_nymag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">remove Ovid&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Metamorphoses<\/em><\/a> from one class reading list, a book that <a href=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=16543\">triggered\u00a0sensitive fee-fees<\/a> in some students.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You Can\u2019t Read That! is a periodic post featuring banned book reviews and news roundups.
