{"id":164,"date":"2006-09-14T16:43:31","date_gmt":"2006-09-14T23:43:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=164"},"modified":"2007-07-08T14:16:43","modified_gmt":"2007-07-08T21:16:43","slug":"i-hate-getting-old-reason-72","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=164","title":{"rendered":"I Hate Getting Old: Reason #72"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=18\">Perforated veins<\/a>.\u00a0 Yeah, I got &#8217;em, and I don&#8217;t want &#8217;em.\u00a0 This morning my friendly neighborhood vascular surgeon performed the first of four procedures, a laser endoscopy on a large vein in my right thigh.\u00a0 Essentially, he zapped the vein from the inside out, and now it&#8217;s closed . . . my body will adjust the return blood flow through other, healthier veins.\u00a0 After evaluation, we&#8217;ll move on to cauterizing the damaged veins in my right calf.\u00a0 Eventually I&#8217;ll have similar work done on my left leg.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t feel right blogging about my own bodily degeneration.\u00a0\u00a0We all get old and decrepit,\u00a0and what&#8217;s new about that?\u00a0 What prompted me to write about this is that there&#8217;s just no reason for me to have vascular problems.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t have diabetes, nor is there any diabetes in my family.\u00a0 I ran for years and years, and I still hike and ride bicycles.\u00a0 So why did the veins in my legs break down?<\/p>\n<p>The only thing I can think of is that I flew high-performance jet fighters.\u00a0 I started flying the F-15 in 1978 and continued to fly it into the 1990s.\u00a0 Moreover, I was one of the first generation of USAF pilots to routinely subject their bodies to extremely high G forces (7 to 9 Gs on\u00a0typical air combat training missions).<\/p>\n<p>Last night I decided to try to find out if there&#8217;s a link between vascular damage and regular exposure to high G forces.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t\u00a0know where to start looking, so I started by reaching out to other retired F-15 pilots, asking if anyone else is experiencing these kinds of problems.\u00a0 No answers yet.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s as far as I got before it was time to go to the surgeon&#8217;s office this morning.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t say anything about this\u00a0to the surgeon or his assistant, but halfway through the operation he asked me what bought me to Tucson.\u00a0 I explained that I came here to train USAF pilots after retiring from the USAF myself.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Oh, were you a pilot?&#8221;
