News<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Banned in Tucson\u2122 author <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2012\/may\/18\/anti-intellectualism-us-book-banning\" target=\"_blank\">Patricia Williams<\/a> takes on the rising tide of academic book bannings,\u00a0firings, and the growing disregard for scholarship in the USA.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of the growing disregard for scholarship,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wonkette.com\/568282\/rush-limbaughs-crappy-books-will-save-kids-from-a-p-history\" target=\"_blank\">Rush Limbaugh<\/a> supports replacing the teaching of actual history with the teaching of American exceptionalism. Would you be surprised to learn\u00a0he has a financial stake in the textbook business?<\/p>\n<p>The conservative school board members in Gilbert, Arizona who voted to cut pages out of a high school honors biology textbook have <a href=\"http:\/\/ncac.org\/blog\/supplementation-not-suppression-officials-in-gilbert-az-wont-redact-pages-from-a-biology-textbook\/\" target=\"_blank\">formally agreed to hand over\u00a0their scissors<\/a>. While\u00a0not outright book-banning, requiring teachers to get parental permission before teaching certain books or showing certain documentaries, will likely have the same effect.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly everyone has heard about the briefly-withdrawn movie <em>The Interview<\/em>, so I won&#8217;t recap that story here. This is not the first time <a href=\"http:\/\/www.movieguide.org\/news-articles\/hollywood-sun.html\" target=\"_blank\">Hollywood has censored itself<\/a>, and it likely won&#8217;t be the last. Remember that movie where the teenaged girl gets an abortion and is happy she did? Me neither.<\/p>\n<p>Also, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2014\/12\/26\/hard-leftists-are-as-guilty-of-censorship-as-north-koreas-dictator\/\" target=\"_blank\">this<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[Kim Jong Un&#8217;s]\u00a0actions emulate those of hard-left feminists, radical Muslims, university administrators, and others who seek to prevent the publication or distribution of material they deem offensive.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Worth a look:\u00a0<i>Fat Angie\u00a0<\/i>author <a href=\"http:\/\/beyoumediagroup.com\/2014\/12\/15\/five-questions-on-censorship-with-fat-angie-author-e-e-charlton-trujillo\/\" target=\"_blank\">e.E. Charlton-Trujillo<\/a> talks about\u00a0censorship.<\/p>\n<p>Ending on a happy note:\u00a0<em>The Miseducation of Cameron Post<\/em>\u00a0will <a href=\"http:\/\/www.delmarvanow.com\/story\/news\/local\/delaware\/2014\/12\/16\/book-ban-indian-rriver\/20479559\/\" target=\"_blank\">remain on\u00a0the shelves<\/a> of Sussex Central High School Library in Georgetown, Delaware, after the school district board president abandoned his campaign to have the book banned.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You Can&#8217;t Read That! is a periodic post featuring banned book reviews and news roundups.
