{"id":15569,"date":"2014-10-30T10:23:03","date_gmt":"2014-10-30T17:23:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=15569"},"modified":"2014-10-30T10:24:54","modified_gmt":"2014-10-30T17:24:54","slug":"hey-baby","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=15569","title":{"rendered":"Hey, Baby"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[youtube]https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nvccehgpXP4[\/youtube]<\/p>\n<p>I thought this video, which has been widely shared on Twitter, would be all over Facebook by now, but so far no one in my small circle of friends has posted it.<\/p>\n<p>Too often, when women try to\u00a0explain the sexual harassment they experience on the street, fending off or trying to ignore comments and cracks, men, though they may not say it out loud, think\u00a0&#8220;Girl, if you&#8217;re not talking actual assault or rape, I&#8217;m tuning you out.&#8221; It&#8217;s a lot more effective to show it in action, as this video does.<\/p>\n<p>I was going to post it to Facebook myself, because I think it&#8217;s a good teaching tool (Jessica Williams recently did <a href=\"http:\/\/thedailyshow.cc.com\/videos\/5ndnit\/jessica-s-feminized-atmosphere\" target=\"_blank\">a Daily Show segment<\/a> that makes the same point about sexual catcalling, and I was going to post it too), but then I started overthinking it, as usual.<\/p>\n<p>If I post it, as a man, will I look\u00a0like one of those creeps who take women&#8217;s studies classes as a ploy\u00a0to get laid? If I forward it to women I know, hoping they&#8217;ll post it so I can share it, will they see right through me?<\/p>\n<p>Then I read an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/xx_factor\/2014\/10\/29\/catcalling_video_hollaback_s_look_at_street_harassment_in_nyc_edited_out.html\" target=\"_blank\">article in Slate<\/a> pointing out that\u00a0out of ten hours of footage, whoever put it together edited out\u00a0catcalling white men and left only men of color. So it&#8217;s a racist video, and now I&#8217;m a racist because I didn&#8217;t pick up on that the first time I watched it, no doubt\u00a0because my inner racist saw\u00a0those dark-skinned\u00a0men\u00a0hey-babying that woman\u00a0and subconsciously thought, &#8220;Well\u00a0of course, they\u00a0were all\u00a0raised in primitive\u00a0cultures where\u00a0boys are valued over girls.&#8221; Now I&#8217;m an awful person just for thinking about posting it!<\/p>\n<p>Like I said, overthinking.
