{"id":1456,"date":"2009-01-16T12:53:42","date_gmt":"2009-01-16T19:53:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=1456"},"modified":"2009-01-16T12:53:42","modified_gmt":"2009-01-16T19:53:42","slug":"sierra-hotel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=1456","title":{"rendered":"Sierra Hotel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wow.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/01\/16\/nyregion\/16crash.html\" target=\"_blank\">Just wow<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1458\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1458\" style=\"width: 425px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/26488692.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1458\" title=\"click for larger\" src=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/26488692.jpg\" alt=\"US Airways Flight 1549\" width=\"425\" height=\"298\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1458\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">US Airways Flight 1549<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Who doesn&#8217;t need a bit of good news once in a while, especially lately?\u00a0 The incredible and ongoing story of US Airways Flight 1549 delivers the feel-good in spades.<\/p>\n<p>Of course I&#8217;m heavily prejudiced in favor of fighter pilots, and the actions of the former fighter pilot in question, the captain of Flight 1549, confirm my bias.\u00a0 He instantly sized up a serious emergency, made quick and good decisions, and flawlessly executed ditching procedures.\u00a0 From everything I&#8217;m hearing, the co-pilot and cabin crew were flawless under pressure as well, and the passengers . . . well, look at them!\u00a0 That is not an image of panic.\u00a0 The three guys out on the tip of the right wing are probably texting wives and friends on their Blackberries.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also nice to know stuff works.\u00a0 Emergency exits, rafts, stuff like that.\u00a0 I was particularly impressed with this photo:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1459\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1459\" style=\"width: 377px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1459\" src=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/16reader3a.jpg\" alt=\"Debris from Flight 1549\" width=\"377\" height=\"500\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1459\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Debris from Flight 1549<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>They tell us our seat cushions are flotation devices.\u00a0 I always want to pull mine away from the seat to see if, one, it really does pull away; two, it really does have shoulder straps; and three \u2014 if only there was a kiddy pool of water in the aisle \u2014 it really does float.\u00a0 Guess what?\u00a0 They aren&#8217;t lying about those seat cushions!\u00a0 Hmmm . . . now that I think about it, not many passengers in the top photo seem to be wearing them. . . .<\/p>\n<p>Of course all the morning news show anchorpeople are interviewing passengers, but they&#8217;re asking uneducated, dumb questions.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s what I want to ask the passengers: what happened with the overhead bins on impact?\u00a0 Did they stay closed, or did some of them pop open, and did all that heavy luggage come crashing down on peoples&#8217; heads?\u00a0 That&#8217;s something I always worry about.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, sierra hotel to everyone involved!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wow.\u00a0 Just wow.
