{"id":1404,"date":"2009-01-12T17:51:54","date_gmt":"2009-01-13T00:51:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=1404"},"modified":"2009-01-12T17:56:20","modified_gmt":"2009-01-13T00:56:20","slug":"old-iron","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=1404","title":{"rendered":"Old Iron"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Speaking of cars (see <a href=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=1399\" target=\"_self\">previous entry<\/a>), I&#8217;m riding my motorcycle up to Scottsdale tomorrow to see the <a href=\"http:\/\/phoenix.about.com\/cs\/events\/a\/barrettjack01.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Barrett-Jackson Auction<\/a>.\u00a0 Judging by the prices people pay for cars at B-J, I figured it probably cost a couple of hundred just to get in the gate.\u00a0 This year I took the trouble to Google ticket prices, and it turns out it&#8217;s only $15.\u00a0 Hell, I can afford that!<\/p>\n<p>So I&#8217;m riding up in the morning.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll spend the day drooling over cars, then spend the night at my daughter&#8217;s apartment in Phoenix and ride home Wednesday.\u00a0 My first real outing since retirement.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not interested in muscle cars, particularly the Chrysler products of the 60s and 70s.\u00a0 They were horrible cars: poorly made and unsafe (under-suspended, under-braked, under-everythinged save in the engine department).\u00a0 I can see why drag racers pay top dollar for good hemi engines.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t see why anyone would pay more than low Blue Book for an old Barracuda or Road Runner, unless all they really wanted was the engine.<\/p>\n<p>No, my interests lean toward classics and antiques, which for me generally means anything made before 1960.\u00a0 When the Speed Channel airs the Barrett-Jackson Auction, they tend to focus on muscle cars at the expense of classics and antiques, but I bet there will be a ton of classics and antiques there.\u00a0 I hope I&#8217;ll be able to take photos.\u00a0 I hope there are Nashes there, especially Airflytes from 1949-1951 . . .
