Until then, we&#8217;ll have to rely on Auden&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.heritage.org\/2012\/12\/05\/we-fight-censorship-a-promising-step-for-information-freedom\/\" target=\"_blank\">points of light<\/a>, flashing out wherever the Just exchange their messages.<\/p>\n<p>I think we all understand why states refuse to issue certain personalized license plates, even though it&#8217;s a form of censorship. <a href=\"http:\/\/hamptonroads.com\/2012\/11\/trouble-virginias-plates\" target=\"_blank\">That might be about to change<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Michigan college <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlive.com\/news\/saginaw\/index.ssf\/2012\/12\/svsu_student_says_university_h.html\" target=\"_blank\">censors &#8220;fuck censorship&#8221; posters<\/a>. Call me old-fashioned, but I&#8217;m okay with that. I&#8217;m not okay with forcing offensive language on people in public places.<\/p>\n<p>Nobel-winning Chinese author Mo Yan\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/features\/books\/jacketcopy\/la-et-jc-bummer-nobel-prizewinner-mo-yan-defends-censorship-20121206,0,3452308.story\" target=\"_blank\">defends censorship<\/a>. Now before you refer me to my previous paragraph and accuse me of calling the kettle black, Mo Yan isn&#8217;t talking about dirty words on T-shirts &#8230; he&#8217;s talking about state censorship of political speech. And that&#8217;s disappointing.<\/p>\n<p>If you can&#8217;t allow schoolchildren to read a book about gay penguins, you damn well can&#8217;t let them see a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2012\/11\/12\/and-then-came-tango-gay-penguin-play-canceled_n_2119085.html\" target=\"_blank\">play about gay penguins<\/a> either!<\/p>\n<p>One South Carolina librarian takes it upon herself to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/features\/books\/jacketcopy\/la-et-jc-alan-moore-graphic-novel-banned-from-south-carolina-library-20121206,0,3467580.story\" target=\"_blank\">remove a graphic novel from the library<\/a>\u00a0rather than comply with her own rule &#8230; you know, the one that says you can&#8217;t let children check out books from the &#8220;adults only&#8221; section.<\/p>\n<p>Book-banning activist parents are popping up all over: in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcall.com\/news\/local\/eastpenn\/mc-east-penn-book-challenge-20121023,0,2316755.story\" target=\"_blank\">Pennsylvania<\/a>, in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cbldf.org\/2012\/10\/seattle-area-resident-shocked-at-yaoi-manga-asks-library-to-revise-circulation-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Washington<\/a>, in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2012\/11\/05\/sarah-timme-colorado-mom-_n_2077063.html\" target=\"_blank\">Colorado<\/a>, in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.10tv.com\/content\/stories\/2012\/11\/30\/grandview-ninth-grade-english-assignment-sparks-controversy.html\" target=\"_blank\">Ohio<\/a>. I smell Christian right rats at work.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a related attack on books and learning, this time in North Carolina:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>SafeLibraries hypes what appears to be a Christian right petition to &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/safelibraries.blogspot.com\/2012\/11\/2300.html\" target=\"_blank\">stop schools from requiring explicit reading material<\/a>.&#8221; The petitioners, many of whom are not parents, aren&#8217;t after <em>Fanny Hill<\/em> or <em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em>. They&#8217;re targeting Margaret Atwood&#8217;s <em>A Handmaid&#8217;s Tale<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>One of the petitioners comes right out and says it: she wants schools to ban books that &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/images.www.news-record.com\/content\/2012\/11\/16\/article\/two_views_on_books_in_guilford_schools\" target=\"_blank\">misrepresent Christianity or have an anti-Christian bias<\/a>.&#8221; She throws in some verbiage about pornography, too, but the ram-my-religion-down-your-throat force is strong with this one.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You Can\u2019t Read That! is a periodic post about censorship and banned books.
