At a meeting, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kvoa.com\/news\/tusd-mas-books-will-not-be-restored\/\" target=\"_blank\">rest of the school board disagreed<\/a>, and the book banning continues. \u00a0A <a href=\" http:\/\/www.kgun9.com\/news\/local\/163655636.html\" target=\"_blank\">local news outlet<\/a> reported on the meeting, slanting their coverage to push the notion that no books were ever banned and that the whole issue is being sensationalized by <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\"><span style=\"color: red;\">dirty hippies and Mexicans<\/span><\/span> activists. \u00a0A local blogger responded by posting a <a href=\"http:\/\/threesonorans.com\/2012\/07\/28\/kgun9\/#more-10438\" target=\"_blank\">devastating takedown<\/a> of the news outlet&#8217;s history of misreporting the Tucson book bannings.<\/p>\n<p>In summary: banned books still banned.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Elsewhere:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>RIP <a href=\"http:\/\/bannedbooks.world.edu\/2012\/08\/05\/banned-books-awareness-gore-vidal-a-tribute\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gore Vidal<\/a>,\u00a0whose novel <em>The City and the Pillar<\/em> was denounced for LGBT content.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s an annoying ad at the beginning of the video, but what follows is a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.digtriad.com\/video\/default.aspx?bctid=1738226918001\" target=\"_blank\">surprisingly in-depth local news segment on banned books<\/a> and how area libraries and school boards respond to challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Worth reading: <a href=\"http:\/\/bannedbooks.world.edu\/2012\/07\/22\/banned-books-awareness-the-political-agenda-of-the-morality-police\/#.UAv0UCy-5CA.twitter\" target=\"_blank\">The Political Agenda of the Morality Police<\/a>. \u00a0My only objection? \u00a0The author doesn&#8217;t connect the dots tying widespread incidents of book challenging to organized religious\/right-wing activism. \u00a0Here are some items I&#8217;ve covered in previous YCRT! columns:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/justice\/2011\/08\/19\/299611\/censorship-on-the-rise-u-s-schools-have-banned-more-than-20-books-this-year\/\" target=\"_blank\">Censorship On The Rise: U.S. Schools Have Banned More Than 20 Books This Year<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/education\/2010-12-01-bookbans01_ST_N.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Those challenging books find strength in numbers<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/commentisfree\/cifamerica\/2011\/aug\/24\/tea-party-banning-books\" target=\"_blank\">The Tea Party moves to ban books<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/present\/view?id=df3ng3tp_9c3mrnngg&amp;pli=1\" target=\"_blank\">A Powerpoint presentation being given to groups of conservative and religious parents around the country<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.columbiamissourian.com\/p\/book-challenges\/\" target=\"_blank\">good summary<\/a> of book challenges and school board responses in Missouri, lately a hotbed of book banning activity.<\/p>\n<p>Book banners ask &#8220;won&#8217;t somebody think of the children?&#8221; \u00a0This writer says &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fuelyourwriting.com\/say-goodbye-to-our-future-an-emotional-response-to-censorship\/\" target=\"_blank\">I <em>am<\/em> thinking of the children<\/a>!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Retail censorship? What you can &#8230; and can&#8217;t &#8230; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.askamanager.org\/2012\/08\/my-employer-banned-books-in-the-break-room.html\" target=\"_blank\">read in your workplace break room<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I like this proposed <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2012\/07\/25\/technology\/451-error-censorship\/?source=cnn_bin\" target=\"_blank\">error message for internet censorship<\/a> (the reference, for those of you who don&#8217;t get it&mdash;as I did not at first&mdash;is to the Monty Python film <em>Life of Brian<\/em>):<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10451\" title=\"Error 451\" src=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Error-451.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"475\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Error-451.jpg 475w, https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Error-451-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Error-451-450x272.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 475px) 100vw, 475px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Speaking of which, here&#8217;s an update on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eff.org\/deeplinks\/2012\/07\/week-internet-censorship-china-saudi-arabia-sweden-UAE\" target=\"_blank\">internet censorship around the world<\/a>. \u00a0Oh, but it won&#8217;t happen here, you say. \u00a0Are you sure about that? \u00a0Did you know NBC owns Twitter? \u00a0Now that you do, you might want to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.examiner.com\/article\/twitter-censors-olympic-coverage-critic-due-to-nbc-partnership\" target=\"_blank\">be careful what you tweet about NBC&#8217;s crappy Olympics coverage<\/a>!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You Can&#8217;t Read That! is a periodic roundup of news about banned and challenged books.
