Not really, I&#8217;m ashamed to admit.  <a href=\"http:\/\/juricana-juricana.blogspot.com\/2012\/07\/in-canada-and-u.html\" target=\"_blank\">Interesting essay<\/a> on book banning efforts in North America.<\/p>\n<p>Literature dealing with hot-button topics such as AIDS and child abuse are okay for classroom use &#8230; so long as those works have happy endings. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bannedbooks.world.edu\/2012\/07\/15\/banned-books-awareness-bastard-out-of-carolina\/\" target=\"_blank\">These are the rules<\/a>, according to the administrative board of the Fremont Unified School District in California.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/bannedbooks.world.edu\/2012\/07\/15\/banned-books-awareness-bastard-out-of-carolina\/\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a>More on Fremont, California:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/top-stories\/ci_21029903\/fremont-students-blocked-from-reading-renowned-work-again?source=inthenews\" target=\"_blank\">book banning in a blue district<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Our Republican friends are always reciting talking points. \u00a0Here are some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/news\/mediapresscenter\/presscenter\/onlinemessagebook\/bannedbooksweek_tp\" target=\"_blank\">talking points we can use to defend the books we love<\/a>, courtesy of the American Library Association.<\/p>\n<p>Last month it was <a href=\"http:\/\/pwoodford.net\/blog\/?p=10201\" target=\"_blank\">Texas<\/a>. \u00a0This month it&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2011\/01\/13\/founding_fathers_tennessee_tea_party\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tennessee<\/a>, where tea partiers are lobbying for depressingly predictable changes to school textbooks.<\/p>\n<p>Banning Teh Gay: a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2012\/07\/12\/books-challenged-for-gay-content_n_1668306.html?utm_hp_ref=books&amp;ir=Books#slide=more230464\" target=\"_blank\">slide show of 16 banned &amp; challenged books<\/a> with gay themes or elements, along with brief descriptions of the challenges filed against them.<\/p>\n<p>Now this sounds like <a href=\"http:\/\/ballston.patch.com\/articles\/arlington-library-honored-for-jobs-tribute-banned-books-videos\" target=\"_blank\">my kind of library<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bannedbooks.world.edu\/2012\/07\/01\/banned-books-awareness-censored-book-prompts-authors-arrest\/\" target=\"_blank\">Vatican bans book, sales go up<\/a> &#8230; you&#8217;d think they&#8217;d learn.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s interesting to compare the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.banned-books.org.uk\/all \" target=\"_blank\">British list<\/a> of banned books with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/advocacy\/banned\/frequentlychallenged\/challengedclassics\/reasonsbanned\/  \" target=\"_blank\">American list<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"http:\/\/www.columbiamissourian.com\/stories\/2012\/07\/18\/missouri-book-challenges-run-gamut-both-rationale-and-result\/\" target=\"_blank\">recap of book challenges in Missouri<\/a> is interesting and revealing. \u00a0That Missouri is my natal state makes it cringeworthy as well.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, last year&#8217;s teabagger-inspired book banning battle in Missouri <a href=\"http:\/\/www.columbiamissourian.com\/stories\/2012\/07\/18\/republic-schools-draw-national-attention-banning-classic-novel\/\" target=\"_blank\">has had its intended effect<\/a>: school librarians have knuckled under (this is the saddest article I&#8217;ve read in three years of doing these columns).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So thank you, Mr. Vonnegut, for something. I don\u2019t know what exactly.
