More Shifting Paradigms

I wrote about this before, but damn it, writing about it didn’t exorcise it because it’s still happening: I’ll be in the circle, singing songs and having a good time … suddenly my frame of reference will shift and I’ll think, “What the hell is going on here?

I know enough about myself to step away from the circle when it happens. I’m not going to be a wet blanket and spoil the fun. It’s just me being me, and who am I to pass judgment on hash hilarity?

As I get older and more conservative, the line between hashers just having fun at the circle and hashers bullying other hashers into doing things they might not want to do is moving to the left.

“When one drinks, they all drink!” “Show us your tits!” We’re all grownups: no one’s forcing beer down anyone’s throat through a funnel, no one’s yanking anyone’s bra off. Most of the time it’s just hashers having fun, doing what they want to be doing, whether it’s downing another beer or flashing everyone … but sometimes it verges into bullying, and hashers wind up doing things they don’t want to do because they feel pressured into it. Should they speak up, refuse, hold their ground? Of course, but many times they don’t. Not all of us are strong (especially after a few beers).

A good GM or RA can head this kind of mob behavior off.

Well, like I said, I know when it’s time for me to back away from the circle.
