Harriers Mash Trash: 7/25/10
“Summer in southern Arizona” = “small packs” and this morning was no exception. Pick’n'Flick and I headed down to the corner coffee shop to see who’d show for a ride to Summerhaven on Mount Lemon. We got there at 8:15 and grabbed some coffee. About 8:45, Stella the Bi Fella showed up. “I didn’t know you rode a motorcycle,” I said. “I don’t,” he said, “I just came by to give you shit.” So he gave us shit for five minutes, then left. Exactly at 9:00, the announced start time, Red Headed Woodpecker rode up on his VTX. We waited another five minutes to see if anyone else was coming, but no, so off we went, a mighty pack of three on two motorcycles.
The ride up the mountain was pleasant, getting progressively cooler as we gained altitude. It quit being hot as we climbed past 6,500′, and by the time we got to Summerhaven (8,200′) Woodpecker and I were wishing we’d been as forward-thinking as Pick’n'Flick, who’d brought along a jacket.
We stopped at a coffee shop with an outdoor patio and enjoyed the alpine air for an hour or so, chatting with other motorcyclists.
The ride down the mountain was even cooler than the ride up, due to the effect of pouring rain. Between the rain, soaked clothes, and slow evaporation as we descended into clear conditions, we managed to stay cool all the way to the bottom of the mountain.
Pick’n'Flick and I had things to do, and so did Woodpecker, so we blew off down-downs and on-afters, splitting up on the highway back into town to head our separate ways. It was a small mash, but hey . . . it was a mash. Somebody’s gotta keep the faith, right?
Next month’s mash is still TBD. I’ll try to find a hare, and since it’ll still be hot, expect another short trail (maybe even another Mt. Lemon ride). I’m planning a picnic mash to Kitt Peak in September or October, so stay tuned. In case you missed it, Harriers MCH3 has a new home on the web at OnOnTucson.com. Please drop by and check it out.
