Dear Doctor Down Down,

Members of our hash attended an out of town event near Montgomery, Al several years ato. The venue included a boat house complete with docks. Eventually a last man on the dock contest ensued. I was pushed toward the water by a fairly new hasher in our own hash. My finger ended up twisted in his tank top before it gave loose and I ended up in the lake.

I spent the rest of the weekend hashing with a home made spint on my finger. No ibuprofen to be found. Thank goodness for the numerous kegs.

Upon my return to Rocket Shitty in Huntsville , AL. I learned that the joint (get your mind out of the '60s weed) was broken. Later the next day the joint got pinned to help it heal.

Luckily, to my wife's surprise, that joint is the largest one on that hand. Do I admonish the hasher that tried to push me off the dock or do I thank him?

Ingrid,

Yes, I compartmentalize my blogging. My nerd blog is the biggest one and the readership is 50/50 hashers and non-hashers. I worry that some of the hash stuff would alienate non-hash readers, so apart from the occasional mention of hashing I don’t write about hashing on the nerd blog.

I write three blogs: the Half-Mind Weblog, Paul’s Thing and Crouton’s Kitchen (a cooking blog, separate from the collection of hash on-after party recipes on this blog).

When I started blogging in 2004 there was just one blog, the Half-MInd Weblog. I was still involved with the Half-Mind Catalog and the blog was part of that site. I thought I’d only blog about hashing but I found myself writing about other things more and more often. So after a while I split off from the HMC and started the three blogs I write today.

On Paul’s Thing I write about my personal life and family, motorcycling and bicycling, airplanes, politics, book & movie reviews, whatever catches my interest. The Half-Mind Weblog is strictly for hashing: songs, hash trashes, rants about hashing, the upcoming events calendar, and so on. The cooking blog is probably the nerdiest of all … nothing to do with hashing, just recipes.

Sometimes I’ll be writing about my personal life on Paul’s Thing and hashing will come up since it’s something we still do a lot of. When I mention hashing there, I always link to the hash blog so that non-hashers can learn a bit about hashing if they want to. And sometimes, as with the entry you commented on, a hash blog entry will involve something in my non-hashing life and I’ll link to the personal blog. But usually hashing is hashing and there’s no hard decision to make. If it’s hashing it goes on this blog. Everything else goes on one of the other blogs. There might be two posts that appear on both the Half-Mind Weblog and Paul’s Thing, two out of hundreds.

On Facebook, I tried another tack and decided to be just one person. Most of my Facebook friends are hashers. The non-hashers can take it or leave it, right? On Facebook I post as Paul Woodford and sometimes it’s about hashing and sometimes not. I think that’s what most hashers do on Facebook.

On Twitter, though, I do what I’ve done with the blogs. I have three separate accounts, @paulwoodford, @halfmind, and @cdmenthe. One is the nerd, one is the hasher, one is the cook. And they all have separate lists of people they follow.

Which way is best? I’m still figuring that out.

Hi Flying Booger,

Didn't know you also had a nerd-blog - until I saw your "another commitment"-link on this post.

Book reviews (except for Hare of the Dog-style books) are definitely nerdy - but some of the posts are very much hash - how do you decide what to write where?

Oh Tuna, I miss you; so are so much fun; with you I always had a buddy to get into some trouble with. Give my love to Eject and Suteki when you meet up with them: three people I love and friendships I value.

Didn't know ;you were in LV -- been there a couple of times on doll conventions and could have used a beer and a pal to drink it with, since neither one of us is socially acceptable to anybody but ourselves after a few of them.

I'm wrapping myself with your love and sending mine along back to you on your journey. I'm keeping you in my heart and I'll drink my beers with you in my mind to share them with you.

I'll tell DT after the weekend.

We've been out of the loop too long and I just found myself again this summer and this is a sad catch-up, li'l bro.

As participants from as widely scattered places as Okinawa, England, Switzerland, New Zealand, China and many other locations showed up for this, the world's smallest world interact event, the main topic of discussion was who is Flying Booger and what is his problem? Local Florida hashers were appalled at the local hashers who were spreading the false rumor that I schedule these events every year, take in money, then never hold the event. Paraphrasing their words, as they downed good beer, ate good and abundant food, ran to great pubs, enjoyed top entertainment and even had a good tourist location thrown in for their $69.95 to $125 fee, "What the fuck is up with these poofters?"

When did so many in-crowd,” if we can't control it, it cannot happen” people come into the hash world. More down downs to thin out these negative types are warranted in my personal opinion.

I remember on three continents that if you held an event, they would come. Nobody trashed another person's events. As for me passing along comments from my readers about corruption and Asia/Down Under centricity of Interhash, well, those same comments were passed on by Flying Booger and his readers here, so that is a bit hypocritical don’t you think F.B.?

So all that said, everyone left Orlando happy, well served by the event and disappointed that there were so many people (I won’t use the word hashers because their behavior is not hash behavior) who trash me and my event just because they do not like me for some perceived reason that has no real basis.

I leave you with this. Nobody who has ever attended one of my events ever thought they did not get their money’s worth and nobody ever said they did not have a good time. All these assholes who are trashing my events and calling them fake have never once attended one of them. Off my soapbox now.

See you in Heidelberg next year and in Okinawa the next, where the founders of both have already registered and, unlike Orlando (who held the 3rd event in ’97 by the way with no problems), felt honored that their hashes were chosen to host.

Cheers and On On
