The Perfectly Laid Trial

Ha! Here’s a bit of 1980s hash nostalgia, a hand-typed and illustrated hare guide from the Hogtown H3, sent to me by Toronto hasher Rose eh.

From Rose eh’s accompanying letter: “This was before the internet and email … a fun, hashy read, when times were simpler, but no less beer and shiggy crazed, and [...]

HHHistory: the Italian Connection (Updated)

Update (2/21/12): I just heard a claim that the story of Gus Mackey and the 1947 founding of the Bordighera H3 is false, made up out of whole cloth by some hashers at a later date, and then, inexplicably, accepted by one and all — including Tumbling Bill Panton, who lists the 1947 founding date [...]

Poachers in Red Dresses

Long title: defending Red Dress Runs from non-hashing poachers … and why it’s important.

Friend of the blog Hops recently posted this on Facebook:

Sadly, many hashers reacted like this:

Don’t get me wrong. I understand the reaction (even though it’s assholish). There are no rules, the minute we start getting organized we [...]

Yet More HHHistory

Since my last post I’ve been in communication with Amnesia, the British hasher who uncovered much of Gispert’s early history. Everything Amnesia has to say is interesting and pertinent to the discussion, and this time I asked him about a statement I read a while back, that some of the early Harrier clubs in Malaya [...]

More HHHistory: Gispert’s Body

I never liked it that so many hashes celebrate Gispert’s death with memorial runs … personally, I think we should celebrate his birth. But G’s death is more interesting than his birth, and that’s what hashers focus on. Hashers like the Aussie harrier who recently asked me if I knew where G’s body was actually [...]

HHHistory

I’ve read this interview before, and quote parts of it elsewhere on this blog . . . but I never knew there was video! Enjoy a bit of hash history with one of the original founders, Cecil Lee.

Our Ever-Evolving HHHistory (Updated)

Here’s the CW (conventional wisdom) on early hash history:

Gispert & friends started the Hash House Harriers in Kuala Lumpur in 1938. The club grew and by the start of WWII in 1941 had run over 100 hashes. In 1946, after the war, returning members put the Kuala Lumpur H3 back together and started [...]

R.I.P. Wolf

Just got word that Wolfgang Gust, aka The Wolf, passed away on trail today. Wolf was one of the legendary figures of hashing and I’m proud to have known and have hashed with him. To die while literally on trail . . . now there was a hasher’s hasher!

In memory of Wolf, I’m reposting [...]
