A Well-Founded Fear

I plan to retire at the end of the month and go on Social Security.  This morning my financial advisor suggested I put off retirement until the economy recovers.

My first thought?  If I don’t go on Social Security now — now as in before the end of this year if not sooner — Social Security may not be there.  They won’t cut off payments to those already in the system — there’d be coast-to-coast riots — but they might well cut it off for those who have not yet reached retirement age.  So I’m sticking to my plan.  I can work part time if I have to.

This is the paranoia that comes from living through eight years of the Bush/Cheney administration.  I would absolutely not put anything past these guys.  Shit, in spite of the current crash and looming worldwide depression, they’re probably still making plans to privatize Social Security.

Privatization?  Would that be anything like my IRA?  The one from which $10,000 has disappeared in the past nine months?

No matter how paranoid I get, it’s never enough to keep up.
