We started on longer rides this morning, getting ready for our 35-mile ride in El Tour de Tucson on November 22nd, so we’re officially in training.  This morning we hit the Rillito River bike trail, riding from one end to the other and back again, a total of 25 miles.

Our plan is to do long (20 mile plus) rides every other weekend, with shorter rides in between.  But really, if you can ride 20 or 25 miles, you can easily ride 35.  What we’re actually doing, for any non-bicyclists who may be reading this, is toughening up our butts.

Tucson has only two dedicated bicycle trails, the one we rode this morning and another running between the air base and downtown, maybe 25 miles total.  Shoot, Sacramento had 60 or 70 miles along the Sacramento and American rivers way back in 1970, and probably has hundreds of miles by now.  Our little desert town has a way to go.  Too bad the mayor doesn’t ride a bike . . . I bet he’d shake some funds loose if he did.  Maybe I should run for mayor.
