So My Wife Has this Thing

. . . with one of her sisters.

Donna’s sister Robin comes to visit every three years. Before each visit, Donna spends thousands of dollars on home improvements. I suppose Robin does the same thing when we visit her in Michigan. It’s a showing-off dynamic, like those prairie families you see in old photographs, posing in front of their soddies with all their worldly goods arrayed behind them.

Donna and I come from similar backgrounds. Neither of us grew up with an abundance of money. I understand the showing-off thing. But why this one sister? Why don’t we spend thousands of dollars when our other siblings come to visit? Come to think of it, why don’t we spend this kind of money on each other?

Just wondering, is all . . .
