Independence Day

Sometimes I wonder just how independent I am: at 6:00am sharp Donna cracks the whip and I leap out of bed to start charcoal for the smoker, add water to the pool, sweep the patio, put up the umbrella, and empty our big green utility wagon so we can decorate it for the neighborhood parade.

Ah, the parade! We enjoy our traditions and this is one or our favorites. All the kids – most of the moms and dads, too – will decorate their bicycles and ride through the streets. We’ll put Buckwheat the macaw on his perch and tow him along in the wagon. Later this morning there’ll be a BYO brunch at someone’s house: we’re bringing scalloped potatoes.

It's a parade!

This afternoon a few friends are dropping by to try my smoked brisket, hence the early get-up. I cleaned the pool last night so our guests can swim. It’s gonna be a great day.

To Yanks everywhere, Donna and I wish you a happy 4th of July!
